What's unique about Stanford and its Application Process?

Just wondering. Is there something unique or it is just like all the other highly competitive universities?

They don’t use the common application. They generally frown on supplements (resumes, extra pages, &c). They don’t conduct interviews. They don’t release decisions online, with the exception of emails sent out to international applicants.

turtle pretty much covers it :)

they focus on a lot of intangibles

I think turtle has got it. Also, you can send in a photograph as one of the essay options.

“they focus on a lot of intangibles”

thank goodness for that, or I wouldn’t have gotten in. lol. Oh, and if you get accepted, you get pretty magnets. Yup.

I heard they are more “numbers” driven when it comes to admission. In general their process seems a little more formal - more forms, more rules, more deadlines. They also require the regular app. on Dec 15, not Jan 1 like most schools so keep that in mind -although it might be a plus because you spend more time on it than the rush at the end to finish multiple. The admissions office number is answered by a machine and its not so easy to get through to a human in constrast to the LAC’s and even the IVY’s

uh…i would say Stanford is less numbers driven…thats the reason why I was accepted with a 1450 at stanford and not at cornell and dartmouth(which btw put me on a waiting and admitted a guy with a 1600 at my school) I think they are the least numbers driven…but thats just me.
also, i found it easy to talk to someone in the office when I was applying and afterwards. I could understand why ppl think that cuz a lot of ppl apply from the east coast and the admissions office runs according to PST

Yeah, I don’t think Stanford is as number-driven. But then again, it varies and you can never tell for sure, whether or not someone was accepted at Stanford and rejected at the other schools. Like any application process, it’s unpredictable.

Sounds great

Also heard that they don’t care about freshman grades, is this true? I hope so

Do they “discriminate” against Asians as much as the other schools? I looked at its stats and it said something like 50% or 55% asian.

Also, do they care if I apply from far away? (NY)

Thanks

They completely ignore freshman grades. In fact, they request that your counselor not even list them on the transcript.

Actually, its 24% asian.

Cardinal, I was rejected from both Cornell and Dartmouth, too. And Berkeley! But dear, sweet Stanford was nice enough to take me in.

nkay, thats weird. Any explanation for this ???

Yup: I’m an international student, so getting axed at Berkeley wasn’t too much of a surprise. They take VERY few internationals. As for Cornell, well, everyone from my school was rejected (incl. the top student), so I don’t know what happened there. Maybe they thought we were terrorists or something. Dartmouth - I heard it was ultra selective this year - admit rate dropped by something like 10% And I wasn’t really interested in the two Ivies - I only applied because the campuses were pretty  Great for hiking/walking/camping and such.

thats why applied too!!

but glad things worked out for the best.

My daughter and I felt that Stanfords application process had a much different feel to it than the other schools, they did not send hardly any school info, no interview( that really had us worried since my daughter is great at it),we did not hear from anyone at the school as in phone calls or emails, and they wanted no additional paperwork,So dont take their lack of communication as a rejection it is just the way they do it!

They will only allow one additional recommendation besides guidance counselor and teachers.

on the extracurricular part of the application forms, CAN YOU ATTACH YOUR OWN ACTIVITIES OR AWARDS LIST?? It says “please do not enclse a resume or extra pages of information” but they barely give you ANY room and I feel like I can’t explain anything or represent myself fully! THIS HAS BEEN BOTHERING ME SO MUCH. To any of you who have applied or got in, what did you do about this?

GrumpyBear,

the reason why they give you so little space is because they want you to list the best ones that actually make you stand out and define who you are.

I think they want you to cut all those bs about teasurer or chess club or president of Indian cultural festivity, etc etc.
