What's up with the guy wearing the red clown nose?

<p>Just got back from a very nice resort, met lots of wonderful people, had a blast. But we came back with a mystery and maybe the always-so-helpful-CC-folks can help us solve it: What’s up with the guy in the red clown nose? </p>

<p>At this lovely resort, a guest wore a big red clown nose. He was an otherwise attractive 30ish year old man with a conventional appearance, partner and friends. Not just at the bar after a few drinks, mind you, but 24/7 all week. While working out in the gym. While lounging at the pool. During dinners. While walking alone on the beach! We and others did managed to see him take it off briefly (enough to see a normal, uninjured nose underneath before he put it back on). </p>

<p>We finally decided we were going to ask him…then of course we couldn’t find him after that! We guests talked among ourselves about this mystery nose. We asked a few staff that we got to know. Everyone knew who we were talking about- it’s that kind of thing- but no one knew why. No one had asked. </p>

<p>So we may never know the story behind the big red clown nose. Were we inadvertent participants in an ethnographic study? Did he belong to a clown nose movement we are still unaware of? Was this an example of my-strange-addiction? A bet gone bad? Or…??</p>

<p>CC’ers if you have any good ideas, I’d love to hear them. Or if you ever saw this guy or others wearing clown noses in public, do share!</p>

<p>Next time ask right away! I met two extremely eccentric people at two separate social occasions. At both I was the only one to approach and ask questions and I have never regretted it. In fact both people made my day. One was the “purple lady” a local woman who was obsessed with the color purple. I asked her lots of questions about her life and she was fascinating. the second was very recently. I sat next to a very eccentric fairly famous man at a fundraiser. I chatted him up and he made my night.</p>

<p>Oh i wish it had been Robin Williams. And we so wish we had asked right away ebeee…earlier on, he was always with is crowd and it just never seemed like a good time. Shoulda! Shoulda! </p>

<p>Younghoss is right, Booklady. We liked your theory too until we saw the normal nose underneath.</p>

<p>Momsquad, you might be really onto something here! Holy cow. I see he was not alone! How funny to do at a resort of all places…one of the few places in life where no one needs any uplifting at all or an excuse to get to know strangers. Maybe he took his craft very seriously! Or his occupation musica!</p>

<p>Did anyone read the play “Scorched,” upon which the film “Incendies” is based? Believe it or not, there is a clown nose in that.</p>

<p>Probably has no connection with the man at the resort, though.</p>

<p>My kid, when she was infatuated with Britain, wore a red nose. There’s one day they celebrate that way. I forget the name, maybe Comic Day? Was this guy wearing it all the time?</p>

<p>I’m not sure about Starbright’s mystery man, but I can only hope he is as inspired as I am about wearing a nose in public. Heck, maybe he heard about my project or we met at Burning Man? Or perhaps he liked the Red Nose Day in the UK, as mentioned too. Even if it was a “lost bet” scenario, it’s still pretty awesome. Strike that, it IS awesome!</p>

<p>Ultimately, I wear a nose around 75% of the time and I’m NOT a professional clown.

<p>My idea is to be subtle…the reason it works is because everything ELSE about you is “Normal”, right?
The inclusion of the nose is what creates the dissonance and that slight shift in “reality” is very important…it can (gently) jar people enough to open that door, that opportunity in them for opening up and taking a chance, taking a little risk to interact with someone they don’t know…who has on a clown nose!?!</p>

<p>When you’re waiting with a kind word, a laugh, a validation that you’re NOT crazy, just happy…man, that’s powerful powerful stuff!</p>

<p>Ultimately, one’s attitude, your inner light, your reason raison d’etre that can make a difference in people’s lives and it’s a simple as the nose on your face.</p>

<p>Be subtle and loving and see what happens </p>

<p>I wanted to put this out there because the intent of WhyTheNose is pure joy and simplicity.
This ISN’T an ART project where every shot is massaged and edited and then dropped into place like a gallery showing.
The pictures you see are as they occurred and, hopefully, capture the essence of that moment when unexpected joy landed on the faces you see highlighted here.
Isn’t that what it’s all about?</p>

<p>Sounds JUST like the guy who lives in my building who always wears a clown nose = attractive, dresses nicely, late 20’s/early 30’s, has an attractive girlfriend.
It is a building full of performers - so that MIGHT explain it ---- but he doesn’t seem particularly into making people smile as Tex Allen suggests. I’ve wondered about him for a few years now. I don’t get the sense that he wants anyone to ask him why…</p>
