What's up with the "Million Student March?"

The organizer, Keely Mullen (4th year, Northeastern University, Boston) , besides being completely unprepared to discuss the issues surrounding the cause for which she’s organized a national event, makes some pretty unbelieveable claims…

According to Keely’s interview with Cavuto, she said her family is “very working class” and is on “numerous forms of government assistance.”

At 5:00 in the video…

But… *“Assessor records show that Mullen’s family has a home on West Wabansia Avenue in Chicago’s north side that carries a value of $989,990. According to BlockShopper, the student’s father, Steven Mullen, paid a little more than $1 million for the home in 2005.” *

Really? A family in a million dollar home is on “numerous forms of government assistance?”

The more likely motivation… Keely Mullen, 4th year Northeastern U student… said she expects to owe about $150,000 in student loans when she graduates.

THAT’S what Northeastern U (Boston) at $45,000+ tuition/year is teaching their students?

NOT impressed with the quality of a Northeastern education at this point…

Wait… someone believes that living in a million+ house is the hallmark of the middle/working class?

Weird, it almost sounds like she’s an average CC poster…

She is 19 years old and knows everything.

Is living in a million dollar home the hallmark of a “very working class” family on “multiple forms of government assistance?”

That video was painful to watch. She was obviously unprepared, but that doesn’t speak to the school, I think. She just doesn’t quite understand what middle class means - could be a result of her own life circumstances, she wasn’t exposed to it at school, etc. But, I think that it’s important to realize that at least this event will get a conversation started.

As a 4th year Northeastern University student, should she be that uninformed?

Free!!! And as someone said on a similar thread, this could be an example of ‘astroturfing’. Convenient timing.

The rest of us who drained our savings and tightened our belts to put our kids through college are just schmucks.

Perhaps the handlers would have been better off getting a more intelligent Northeastern University student who didn’t come from a million dollar home to represent the cause?

Northeastern is private. She graduated from a private high school in Chicago. She is asking for a free public education when it does not appear she has ever attended a public school.

Couldn’t someone who got into Northeastern get a pretty nice scholarship at Illinois State University?

"Couldn’t someone who got into Northeastern get a pretty nice scholarship at Illinois State University? "

^ not someone THAT dense…
jmho

@gettingschooled Yes. With that projected debt load at graduation she didn’t get any merit aid from Northeastern and not much, if any, need based aid.

As a Northeastern alum and advocate she is a profound embarrassment

She is asking for $15 minimum wage Currently we have the largest income inequality in the last 100 years. She is asking for free public education and so are alot of other people. What is the OPs point? That we should do away with the minimum wage and we should not finance public education? Lets talk about the issues

Her uptalk in that video drives me nuts.

Thank you for your honesty.

Do you and other Northeastern alum and advocates recognize the damage she’s done to your educational institution? Why should anyone pay $45,000+ in tuition alone per year to be that ignorant after 3+ years at Northeastern?

I don’t know enough about Illinois public universities to pick one that is less selective. Northeastern’s acceptance rate is in the 30% range. Anyone with the stats to get in there should have been able to get a scholarship to a directional state U in Illinois - maybe even one in Chicago where she could have lived for free in her million dollar home.

I’m sorry, but $150,000 in student loan debt? WHO is that stupid? People have MORTGAGES that aren’t even that high.

@jiffsmom Calling a 20 year girl stupid may work to divert peoples attention But how about addressing the issues. They are 1. 15 minimum wage 2. Government support of public universities 3. Forgiving student loan debt Do you think you can address the issues?? These are serious and important issues

Ok as to number three- why should we as a society forgive a millionaire’s daughter’s 150,000 debt when she had other choices such as an Illinois school located near her million dollar home where she could have incurred far less debt and possibly none? You have not told us why you think that makes sense.

The issues? I agree with @gettingschooled“why should we as a society forgive a millionaire’s daughter’s 150,000 debt when she had other choices such as an Illinois school located near her million dollar home where she could have incurred far less debt and possibly none?”

First off you need to address the question of whether parents should be responsible for the debts of their kids. Second generally any foregiveness of student loan debt is tied to public service or a 10 year waiting period and minimal ability to repay the debt. And yes I am in favor of that concept. Tax debt can be foregiven through Offers in compromise why not student loan debt?
