What's Your FAFSA Status?

It will get done. It may take more time than anyone wants, but it will get done. And everyone is in the same boat.

Just read this too, which the U.S. Department of Education announced today

Statement on FAFSA Calculation Error.

So schools won’t be able to look at the “big picture” of accepted students, and will be awarding their institutional need based aid on a first come first served basis?

Really? Really
this whole process is screwed up. I’m so sorry for families dealing with this at this time.

Would this change impact who’s Pell eligible? Could some people just declared Pell eligible for the minimal about get pushed into not eligible?

I assume some will wait. Others may be able to use their historical data to award. What is really tough is that every incorrect award (due to change in SAI) has to be manually repackaged. I remember how much of that we had to do at a large university where I worked
and that was without all of this mess. It’s going to be a very daunting task. The hits just keep on coming.

Yes, it is possible.

My husband said they finally have received and processed their first FAFSA batch. But, they had a lot of errors. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

God that’s brutal. If you got 750 and the school matches
 poof. $1500 up in smoke.

Fafsa processed 3/18 but D24 can’t add schools. Is that not yet available?

Not yet.

What date did you submit?

My son’s was submitted on 1/2 or 1/3, and processed on 3/14.

He did not receive an email. No change on SAI. No errors.

Completed on 1/2, processed on 3/15 and received by the school (Wheaton MA) on 3/22 according to my daughter’s portal.

Ours was completed 2/1 and processed today, 3/23. Our SAI more than doubled from the email we got originally to today. Yikes.

Yes ours doubled too

Some doubled. Others fell in half. Seems hard to believe this was all based on an inflation adjustment or “tweaks.”

If student assets were originally ignored, including them can really bump up SAI. There is no asset protection for dependent students.

My SAI went from 24k to 54k. Trust me, my student does not have that much in assets! She has under $5k in assets. I guess they assume she’ll get a summer job earning another $30k this year. Lol.

Once you can see the FAFSA, hopefully in a week, be sure to check all the answers. It’s possible your D put an extra 0 or two somewhere. It’s always a good idea to double check.

I can see the answers that were entered on the form and they look right. They match my spreadsheet. I can’t change anything, so it would seem if they have the same numbers that they had last month, it’s the formula that changed to cause the 30k increase in the SAI.
