I’ve seen threads before on the cell phones themselves, but don’t recall seeing one on the apps. Yep, there are thousands of them out there. I’m curious what your favorite apps are.

To make this useful, perhaps we can use this format:

PLATFORM (IPhone, Android, Blackberry, etc):
CATEGORY (Productivity, Social, Finance, Games, etc):
NAME OF APP:
WHAT IT DOES/WHY YOU LIKE IT (be brief):
AVAILABLE ON OTHER PLATFORMS (if you know):

PLATFORM: Android
CATEGORY: Productivity
NAME OF APP: VocaNote
WHAT IT DOES/WHY YOU LIKE IT: Push the icon, say your short note to yourself and end. It is sent to your default email (which can be changed) or three other places, which you label in the set up (e.g. work, name of spouse, etc.) Great for quick, on the fly stuff you don’t need to catalog and save and no need to use the keyboard.
AVAILABLE ON OTHER PLATFORMS: Unsure

ETA: I think it can also send as SMS (text) but I don’t use tha.

ANDROID
travel/entertainment
YELP
when out and about I can search nearby restaurants with real time directions and get those great YELP reviews.
It helps that YELPERS are very active in So Cal.

Most of the apps that I like on my Blackberry-tour are also available for my ipod touch.
Facebook/Twitter ( communication)
Gmail
Huffington Post
local newspapers
Poynt ( directions-reviews-cheap gas-reservations)
Kindle

Apps that I love on my ipod
I would hate to have to choose one.
Guitar toolkit- tuner/metronome/500,000 chords
ibooks- ereader bookstore also that imports pdf
Dirr’s trees & shrubs ( plant database with pics & requirements)
How to Cook Everything- Mark Bittman…
Pain Killer 2.0 - special type of binaural beat methodology (TBSW) to release endorphins to naturally, safely stop pain- yes it actually works.

PLATFORM: Apple
CATEGORY: Food
NAME OF APP: VegOut
WHAT IT DOES/WHY YOU LIKE IT: I am vegan so this is specific to vegetarian/vegans but I LOVE it - it will tell you what local places are vegan/vegetarian friendly which is a huge help when away from home and we have found some great places we wouldn’t have found easilly otherwise.

Android
Health
Instant Heart Rate
Very accurate with heart rate. When I am working out I always have my phone so I always have a heart rate monitor.

iPhone
Productivity
JotNot
This makes a very good scanner. After you’ve taken a picture of a document, you can email it to yourself in various formats, or archive them in various ways (Dropbox, Evernote).

iPhone
Snoozing!
Sleep Cycle
Uses the accelerometer to track your sleeping patterns. You can set an alarm to wake you up during your lightest phase of sleep within a certain time frame (which really does make a difference in waking up refreshed rather than bleary). I think it costs 99 cents.

Going to check out some of the other suggestions!

I love this thread; looking forward to trying some of these apps!

My favorites on my iPod touch (they would also work on an iPhone), in alphabetical order (I couldn’t decide on a preference order, because all these apps are great):
[ul]

[li]Accounts: replaces my checkbook. Very convenient and easy-to-use.
[/li]

[li]CarbonFin Outliner: a to-do list on steroids, and my most-used app.
[/li]

[li]Flixster: among other things, it shows me what’s playing at my favorite local movie theaters (or any movie theater, really, but you can designate favorites), along with show times, Rotten Tomato rating, trailers, and the ability to add the movie to your Netflix queue with a single tap! It also has upcoming box office movies and movies newly released on dvd. One of my favorite apps!
[/li]

[li]Google Voice: free texting. My son is a heavy texter, so this is what I use to stay in touch with him when he is out and about. With the on-screen keyboard, it is so much easier to type a message than it is on the keyboard of my clunky old cell phone. On my iPod touch, it works with wifi.
[/li]

[li]Grocery iQ: a shopping list app. Love it.
[/li]

[/ul]

Among other things, I keep all my household measurments in it. So, when I out browsing for carpet/furniture/curtains/etc (things I won’t afford until college ends) I’ll know what size I need and can estimate the cost.

PLATFORM: Apple
CATEGORY:Entertainment
NAME OF APP: Shazam

Love this app, it allows you to scan any music playing and it will tell you the name of the song, the singer/band and where you can buy it and for how much. If you want to buy it via ITunes you can add it to your library right away. I had to see it to believe it.
There is a free version with up to 4 scans a month no charge. The full price is $4.99 which I found worth it.
