What's Your Kid's "Net" Cost At OOS Public?

<p>For those of you who have kids enrolled at an out-of-state public college or university, I’m curious about what your child’s “net” cost of attendance is for the academic year. Let’s define “net” cost as tuition, room/board, and required fees minus merit aid awarded by the school (loans, work-study and outside scholarships don’t count).</p>

<p>My daughter is at Kansas State University. Her 2008-2009 OOS tuition (32 hours/16 fall/16 spring) is $17,343, single room/community bath and 20 meals/week is $6,848, required fees are $673, for a total of $24,864. Merit aid (so far) is $9,200, for a “net” cost of $15,664. D was invited to apply for an undergraduate research fellowship that would reduce her cost of attendance to $0, but she hasn’t received a decision yet.</p>

<p>Do you mean merit aid or gift aid (which would include need-based grants as well)?</p>

<p>Actually, b@r!um, now that I think about it, need-based grants from the school should qualify under the rules, since that doesn’t have to be paid back and it doesn’t come from an outside party. So let’s throw those in to the formula. Thanks for your insight.</p>

<p>We’re paying about $9k per year for WashDadJr.</p>

<p>We pay about $16,000 of a $30,000 OOS bill at The Ohio State University. Merit aid pays the rest. She loves OSU.</p>

Tuition and Fees $24,797
On-Campus Room and Board $9,088</p>

<p>$5K merit aid (goes down to $2.5 for jr/sr yrs)
D is moving off campus but @ $700/mo rent its probably a wash at best.</p>

<p>Great physics dept, beautiful campus,and she is happy and doing well, so its all good.</p>

<p>Younger D is interested in Montana State in Bozeman:
Tuition/Fees $16,280
Room/Board $6,290
Merit aid tied directly to ACT/SAT - she would get $2K/yr for very mid-range ACT, considerably more for high scores. (You can bet I am encouraging her to re-take).</p>
