What's your pet peeve?

People who feel called upon to make LOUD obnoxious comments about women breastfeeding in public, especially when they try to get you to join in their condemnation. ( “Isn’t that disgusting?!!! In our day, no decent woman would do that, right?” ) I get REALLY annoyed when it’s a situation where there is an unexpected delay. (“Imagine doing that in a subway car!!! With children around, no less! How dare she!!!” ) We’ve been stuck between stations for half an hour. She probably expected to be home by now. Would you really prefer she let a hungry baby SCREAM?!!!

People who stop right as they exit an escalator, figuring out where to go next. It happens in the subway, in department stores, in museums, at sporting events. Where do you expect all the people behind you on the escalator to go?!!!

And then the parents wait until April of 12th grade to tell the student that there is no money, while the student is holding admission letters to colleges that s/he now finds out are all unaffordable.

Does this still happen? I know it did 30 years ago with a security guard at a nearly empty mall telling me I couldn’t breastfeed my TOTALLY wrapped up kid. What a jerk. I asked him if he thought his lunch would taste better in a dirty bathroom stall. Lot of positive change since then thankfully.

Ppl who try to get On an elevator before ppl get off the elevator.

Anything that reeks of “back in MY day…”

There was a post in a local state history group (pop history, not historians) this morning where people were complaining about “snowflakes” (another pet peeve) getting so many snow days that THEY never got. I found data that proved there were plenty of snowdays - tracking with intensity of winters - going back to 1960 (earliest I could find data for). It got called fake news (a third pet peeve).

Or on Monday when my SIL was in labor, her mom and our MIL kept talking about how much they did without when they were giving birth 30 years ago. It was really, REALLY not the time.

@gouf78 Yes, it most definitely does still happen. BTW, it is legal in all 50 states now. Idaho was the last state to pass a law protecting breastfeeding moms. It passed unanimously on Feb 22, 2018. Utah passed a similar law a little earlier–that vote was not unanimous and language which specifically said a bare breast was okay if it was incidental to breastfeeding was removed before passage. https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2018/01/23/bill-seeks-to-clearly-allow-breastfeeding-in-public/

But, yes, people still make comments…

“Anything that reeks of “back in MY day…”
LOL. 1960 doesn’t cut the “back in MY day” test. What’s meant is " the REALLY REALLY back in my day”…

One pet peeve is when people discount other people’s related experiences as not as important as a life-learning lesson as their own personal experiences.

Another one is the news crew out in hurricane force winds trying to point out every piece of driftwood floating by as something new.
A small part of me wants a random flying trash can to roll down and bowl them down…go inside and actually be as responsible as you want your viewers to be.

Excessive swearing, not only in person, but it’s a great way to ruin a movie or a stand-up comedy routine for me when every other line to be f’ing this and f’ing that.

I get the same response about exercise. I try to eat healthy and get some form of exercise in almost every day. There have been periods where the only time I had to exercise was between 8:00 and 10:00 in the evening after 12 hour days at work, then continued to work at home from 10:00 until 2:00 in the morning. I believe the only reason I was able to keep up that pace was because exercise helps me sleep better, gives me more energy, and a better mental outlook.

I really don’t care if someone chooses to spend their free time doing something else or nothing at all, but spare me the it must be nice’ comments as if I have so much more time than you do, then proceed to tell me about all the sitcoms you watched last night after getting home from your 9 to 5 job.

People who do not know how to behave in an audience, whether it’s at a $12 movie or a $150 Broadway show. You’re not in your living room, don’t talk, don’t text, turn off your Apple watch so it doesn’t light up incessantly, and stop verbalizing every reaction you have!

Although I make one exception for the woman sitting next to me at Titanic in 1996 who said loudly, “Oh my god, I think it’s going to sink!” That was just too funny to make me mad. :))

New one. Employers not replying to candidates who made the time and effort to apply.

The dishwasher. All surfaces of all items must be able to be in contact with the spray. You can load it any way you like as long my second sentence is true.

Here is a more recent thread on pet peeves…closed but I think was still up and running in 2017.

oops, posted on the wrong thread!

But on the topic of pet peeves, maybe people who are so stuck in their thinking that they won’t consider another point of view, no matter the argument. That is definitely something that gets to me.

People who swear too much IRL or in media. It definitely ruins comedy and movies for many I know.

People who don’t give a hoot about this planet - can’t be bothered to throw away trash, use less, and/or recycle. Cigarette butts and plastic bags (urban tumbleweeds) are the worst.

Inconsiderate drivers.

Those who don’t know how to behave in an audience. I ended up having to turn around and remark to one well dressed older dude at my son’s graduation that,“I came here to listen to the speakers, not you!” At least he apologized.

Those who look down upon others for either snobbish or prejudice reasons. Real tolerance is such a nice thing. One gets to make all sorts of choices for themselves, but to look down on others simply because they choose differently when it doesn’t affect others is just wrong. Prejudice in the form or racism or gender based or whatever really peeves me. I’m not sure that one is a “pet” peeve.

Seems that (before mandatory bag fees in many areas) many cashiers’ default action was to put stuff in a bag, even when it is not needed or wanted because you were buying one easily carried item.

People who make obnoxious food/mouth noises while eating.

The words “empty nest” - HATE this reference! Always have, always will!

I can’t stand the term “fur baby”. I love pets (especially dogs, but cats, too). I just dislike this term.

People who are chronologically late! Why is it so hard to plan accordingly?

People who say “Hey, what’s up” when they answer the phone. I hear “what do you want”? So rude.

People that are lazy and/or unhelpful. Especially, if they are a house guest. I don’t expect you to run the vacuum or anything, but this isn’t a hotel with daily maid service. Looking at you son’s future MIL… :expressionless:

Lying.
