In contrast to the thread on stuff you are not good at, what is your superpower? What is that one thing that you just naturally excel at?
For me, my superpower is finding the perfect book for people. Just tell me what you like to read, books you have previously enjoyed, and I can pick your next read. I did work for a short time in a library and read a lot, so I have honed this superpower over the years.
Loved this comment on the other thread where somebody proclaimed this superpower “usually always manage to get free shipping.”
I thought of another one - finding things. When my daughter can’t find something in her apartment, she calls me. I can usually figure out where she misplaced the object just by talking to her over the phone from my own home.
@momofboiler1 I also pride myself on my online research skills. However, this is a skill I share with my husband (he can find anything on the internet!)
I’ve never thought of having a superpower, but researching things ad nauseum sounds pretty familiar. I always thought that Katherine Hepburn’s job in Desk Set would have been pretty amazing and at one point thought about becoming a reference/research librarian.
But if I had to think of a superpower, I would say it’s my empathy or maybe open-mindedness (I think they’re kind of intertwined…it’s hard to be empathic if you’re not also open-minded).
And @kiddie, don’t be surprised if you get a PM from me asking for a recommendation…
I’ve always had a vivid graphic memory that enabled me to study by photographing pages in my mind (not perfectly like a true eidetic memory, but close enough to ace any memory/recall-type test). I can also stand in a room and “paint” the walls in different colors or install new furniture in my mind. For the longest time, I thought this was normal until DH mentioned once that he was amazed that I always seemed to know exactly which storage container would perfectly match the amount of soup/stew/liquid I poured in. I said, “Well, you just have to look…” and that started a discussion about something I took for granted that he didn’t share. Though my verbal memory palace has begun to crumble, my mind’s graphic eye is still pretty sharp.
I’m also good at decorating, cooking, sewing, crocheting, cutting/styling hair, writing/editing. And, I can tie a knot in a cherry stem with my tongue.
I’m very impressed with all of you! I used to tell my kids- I can play most sports, parallel park and blow dry hair in addition to being a good listener. But that’s all I’ve got😀
@ChoatieMom I had the same memory! I say had because it’s not anywhere near as good as it used to be, but it come in handy growing up in school.
At the workplace… cost estimating. Don’t ask me how much any item costs, but somehow my project cost estimates are always spot on. Not with the low bidder, but always right where bidders #2-4 come in. Don’t ask me how I do it. I have no idea.
Also at work - creating conceptual layouts. I can whip out really pretty looking things (that will work in reality) in no time flat. Faster than you can get a consultant on the phone to meet with you. Certain offices rely heavily on me for that, and probably why they keep me employed.
I am a master planner. I can get a whole lot done in a very short amount of time.
H’s superpower - being able to control a room full of kids, keeping them on task and behaving (no small feat in our district), and loving him at the same time.
I thought of another one. I can pick the perfect gift (especially if it is a book - related to my first superpower). On occasion, I have given a gift that brought the recipient to tears of joy (only a few times, but of course those times are entrenched in my memory).
I thought of another - picture taker for random strangers. It’s a family joke that no matter where we are, I’m stopped by random people to take their photograph.
Oh my husband gets this all the time. He is the one who is always asked to take pictures of random people. Must be he looks honest (won’t run away with anybody’s camera).
