WhatsApp and Messenger phone calls

I’ve never used these, but would like to be able to talk to some relatives in South America. Are all these phone calls free? Do you just download the WhatsApp app, then do what? How are you able to circumvent paying international rates? What about the messenger phone calls? Can anyone explain how this all work?

yes, they are all free as they use wifi calling, think of face time. same concept, no fees and completely free. you have to download the app and you should see your contacts who have WhatsApp and then you can go from there. not too sure about messenger but I think it is the same idea.

Thank you! I’ve downloaded the app! Will give it a try soon!

My D lives in London and we use WhatsApp for communication all the time. The phone calls are great. We use the chat feature too.

Prior to Covid, my job would frequently take me to foreign countries, and I used WhatsApp to communicate.

As long as both parties had the correct app installed this would work, correct? So if we made sure our kids had the same app as us, we could call them from overseas (if we are ever allowed to travel again…)

yes, both people have to have it. if they do then it works. you just need to have wifi or cell service

I cannot stress enough what a blessing WhatsApp has been to my family. My son in Beirut texts me almost every day. We have video calls frequently. SO different from just a few years ago when my daughter, in 10th grade, studied in Spain. We had very little contact with her and she ran up huge phone bills.

People all over the world use this app. We stay in close touch with friends in South Africa. I can also talk to my niece who is teaching in Chile.

Most of the time, the connection is better than the one we get on our Verizon cell phone at our house.

I’ve used Skype in the past. Do What’sApp or Messenger have any better connections? I know a little more about how Facebook makes money, but how about Messenger or Skype?

yes, WhatsApp is far better than skype, as far as money goes I’m not too sure how they make it

Another vote for WhatsApp. My son had a GF in another country for quite some time, and they talked almost daily. I too have used it to communicate with people in other countries.
