Wheaton College MA

Is this school very conservative? I have a pretty liberal son who wants to look at Wheaton in Norton, MA. Should we take him all the way out there from the Midwest? He would be very unhappy at a conservative school.

Its Wheaton College in Illinois that is the evangelical Christian college- but as evangelical Christian colleges go, it is popular.
But don’t get them mixed up, particulary if you are a science major

I went to Wheaton (mass.) in the late 70’s and keep up relatively, with how it is now. Its not like Wesleyan or Oberlin, but I think it would have its fair share of both parties. Mary Anne Marsh is a liberal political commentator on Fox News and she went to Wheaton in the early 80’s. (Leslie Stahl, too, but awhile back)

Not conservative. Have him look at Bard as well.

Just based on our tour this summer (school not in session), contact with the tour guide and the info session I would say the school is middle of the road. My daughter really liked it, but she is not a party animal (she told her guidance counselor, without telling us, that she didn’t want to go to a party school) or politically active on the left or right. She felt comfortable there. It may end up her first choice.

I was recently at Wheaton for an athletic event. The athletic complex of pool, gym, and indoor track is new and impressive. (The baseball field, which is slightly off campus, is also up-to-date). The college staff with whom I had contact were courteous and professional. I like the seeming fact that the campus has stayed pretty much within its original style, as opposed to occupying lots of local houses. On the other hand, it looked like the science building could use some attention. There did not appear to be stores, movies, etc. in the area that one could easily walk to.

The chapel at the center of campus is pristine and peaceful both inside and out, a lovely sanctuary.

I went to Wheaton from 79 to 81. The campus is beautiful. The college staff were great and it had that feeling where you could actually connect with your professors due to small classes etc. I had professors there I still think of fondly today. That said, I ended up transferring out. At the time it was a girls school and it is kind of in the middle of nowhere. I was there with no car and felt stranded. Norton is a very small town and there was definitely a division between the students and the “townies”. They really push that they are between Boston and Providence but getting to either of them is a bit of a drive and public transportation was not great. Maybe it has improved now…

My daughter visited Wheaton this summer (coming from the west coast). She liked it very much, its about at the top of her list. She’s also quite a liberal.
