Interesting. It’s ok for our President to use vulgar language when referring to women because it’s just “locker room talk”, but when the shoe is on the other foot it’s a terrible.
As usual staggering hypocrisy.

Jay Leno was also on regular tv, not cable tv. And wasn’t hired to be a controversial political commentator-comedian.
Many of you are missing the point. The only standard as to whether any given controversial statement turns out to be a fireable offense is measured in dollars, not in degree of racism or sexism. The operative “-ism” here is capitalism.
It’s not whether a statement is perceived as insulting, or vile, or disgusting, or even racist to some people, or even to a lot of people, that will get a showbiz person fired. What will get them fired is when the SPONSORS are worried about damaging their brands and/or losing business by remaining associated with the comedian in question. It’s all about the money.
Roseanne was already on short leash due to her long history. It took ABC/Disney only one day to see that it wasn’t going to blow over and business was going to be hurt. Whether Samantha Bee is also fired will depend on what happens with her sponsors in the coming hours and days.
Again she has apologized. Ultimately advertisers will decide whether she will remain on the air. Samantha Bee is a late night comedian who hails from the daily show, I’m not shocked at her language and you know what you are getting if you watch her show.
Jay Leno is a Samantha Bee fan
Edit- I super hate that sometimes when I post, must be because of the auto draft save feature, only part of what I type actually posts.
This was an interview from January, assuming it’s allowed, from Hollywood Reporter https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.hollywoodreporter.com/amp/live-feed/jay-leno-opens-up-depressing-state-late-night-today-1073765
@Scipio I suspect you are right that ABC was ready for when, not if, and had a plan in place. It was still surprising that they made the decision before hearing from advertisers though.
“This comment was vile and disgusting and no one should ever be able to proceed on TV with language like that.”
You’re free to write to the network, Bee’s production staff, and the sponsors. As Scipio says, money will decide whether or not Bee keeps her job. Not the fact that she used a word you find disgusting.
I despise the c-word. It’s not a word that’s allowed in my house and my grandfather got an earful from me and my dad last night when he used it.
I’m still not going to have a fit over a word in comparison to calling someone an ape merely because she happens to be black. If I had to choose one to protest, you can bet it’s going to be the vile, racist one.
Oh and I have less of an issue with ■■■■■ than the c-word but still don’t like either of them. Say someone said something vulgar and rapey like “grab 'em by the ■■■■■” vs calling someone a c-word? You can all take a guess and which one I find more repulsive and would protest against.
In context, that statement was vulgar. Beyond vulgar. But it was not rapey.
In the context of not waiting for consent, let alone no intimate relationship, it’s rapey in my world.
The beginning of the sentence specifically referenced women who threw themselves at him. So the consent would have had to come from him as the woman was the aggressor.
Uh, here’s the quote from Trump. The woman in his scenario was in no way the aggressor.
Trump: Yeah, that’s her. With the gold. I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.
Bush: Whatever you want.
Trump: Grab ’em by the ■■■■■. You can do anything.
Sorry, getting too off track I think so I’m biting my lip but we’ve slipped off of the comedian aspect too much.
How about this… haven’t there been some high profile comedians who have claimed that they thought the women wanted them to move in on them? And seemed so shocked to hear otherwise? What’s his name… CK Louis? These powerful, narcissists don’t really believe anyone is saying no to them.
For what it’s worth, still in the entertainment field so should be ok here even though not comedy, I hated that Justin Timberlake/Janet Jackson super bowl performance and not because of the wardrobe malfunction (which many considered vulgar) but because the song was a rape song.
Exactly. And the networks are free to cancel whatever shows they choose, whenever they like. It’s about money. This false equivalency that it matters if one person said this insult, compared to another person’s worse insult is irrelevant. There is no requirement for consistency, this is a free market. Target the advertisers and a show will disappear. There is no required standard for fairness, and apparently none for decency.
The weirdness of targeting Ivanka for a vicious attack due to posting a sweet picture, because somehow she should be responsible for immigration policy makes zero sense to me. But with no decency left, I’m sure it makes perfect sense to those who hate her father. Anthing goes.
I’ve watched a little of Samantha Bee and thought some of it was pretty funny. But when she gets spiteful, mean and crude, it’s not remotely funny anymore. Too bad she feels the need to go there.
Enough people must have been offended that Sam Bee tweeted an apology. Not that it makes what she said OK. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/samantha-bee-apologizes-inexcusable-remark-aimed-ivanka-trump-n878981
I’m glad she apologized but anybody with ANY sense would’ve thought twice. Another unfunny joke.
Did she REALLY need feedback from the public to see that maybe it wasn’t a good idea to call someone vile names on air?
The entertainment industry is living in their own personal bubble.
Her network okayed it before she said it. What’s up with that? It’s not all her.
It’s like being in a bad peer group.
I’m happy that there WAS a backlash…maybe some civil people still exist.
@gouf78, that is her show. She stands on the stage and delivers raunchy, scathing political comedy, punctuated by some video content. Have you seen the show in question? Although I hate the use of the C word her Ivanka line got a huge laugh, so while you didn’t find it funny, apparently her audience did. I think the apology was appropriate. She DID cross a line, even for her comedy.
“so while you didn’t find it funny, apparently her audience did.”
Obviously not. If her audience applauded her she wouldn’t be apologizing.
Not equivalent, imo. Sam Bee’s comment was delivered during her show, and, imo, falls under artistic license. There is a very long history of comedians being vulgar in their acts.
Rosanne’s comment about VJ, imo, was tweeted out by Rosanne the private person, not as her comedic Rosanne persona.
Plus, imo, being vulgar isn’t equivalent to being racist. Is just isn’t no matter how many people say it’s the same thing.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
OK, I let it go on for 6 hours. And despite my earlier post, I had no money in this pool.
But really, what is left to say? We’re down to parsing which is better: being vulgar or being racist? We’re done. And I am not the only moderator who felt it was time to close.
