When do we apply for IGETC certification?

Just a quick question…we apply for the certification AFTER we get accepted to a school right? I’m basically done with my IGETC requirements after this fall so do I also have to wait until I’m basically accepted to a UC? I saw the igetc application and it wanted me to put down the ID number of the UC…so I guess even though I finished everything, I still have to wait until I’m accepted?

Also once we turn in the application, does my CC send some type of paper to the UC? or is it something that is stated on my transcript?

thanks a lot

You apply before you send your transcripts in to the UC you opt to go to. They’ll send in an IGETC certification form to that UC.

Thanks a lot for the reply Grimes. So even though I’m basically done with my IGETC, I still have to wait until around March-May to submit a petition for certification? I was just wondering if it was possible to go in to the admissions office tomorrow and get IGETC CERTIFIED so I don’t need to apply for it later in 2012. I go to SMC btw

Is it possible to be “certified” before you request that they send it to the UC?

Just to be ahead of the race…

@Movgingunit: You can get “IGETC certified” as soon as you’re done with IGETC. They’ll just attach it to your transcript when they send it out. But yeah, you can do it now if you wanted.

@ grimes thanks for the reply bro. I’m looking at the igetc certification form and it also asks me to write down the uc id of mine (school id). do i just skip all that and just turn it in so my school puts me down as a igetc certified student?

thanks again

this is the form by the way

thanks for replying again grimes. I guess I’ll go to the admissions office next month with the form ryan2136 put up and just hand it in and I guess I’ll be IGETC certified? lol

On a second thought, I feel like there is no need to be IGETC 'certified" ahead of time. It seems like our school just wants us to submit the form to be sent when we send our transcripts. no idea though

“It is the student’s responsibility to request IGETC certification during the last
semester of attendance at Santa Monica College prior to transfer.”

I’ll be transferring for Fall 12 but my last semester was this semester (Fall) I obviously won’t know which uc to send it to now, so I should be safer right? The quoted seems kinda confusing because I most likely won’t attend Spring…

@Ryan2136 it looks like yours might be different than my CC. Our IGETC was kept on file, but yours might not want you to turn it in until you’ve picked a school you’re attending.

There’s really no rush to get it done, as it only takes 2-3 days anyway.

@ grimes yeah it seems like you are right. Btw, there shouldn’t be any problems even though I will not be enrolled at the time of the request right? thankss

@Movingunit: Not if your IGETC requirements are already satisfied.

@ Grimes, yeah I finished my IGETC this semester. So I guess I should be all set to go? haha

@Movingunit: Yup, you’re all set. It’s really not a long process, you just meet with a counselor, they check off some stuff, give you a sheet, and you take that to the records department. That’s how it worked at my CC, anyway.

@ Grimes, thank you sirr

No prob
