My scores are 800CR, 800W, but 690M

These were on the SECOND try- FIrst try I got the SAME scores in writing and english, and 670 in math. I AM AN A+ MATH STUDENT but I WORK SLOWLY. Cant seem to beat it…

Then, I got a 740 on the SAT II MATH II- essentially the same percentile as in the SAT I.

Also got 800 in CHEM and 800 in USHISTORY

Top grades, hardest course load.

Should I give up and apply ? Will the math keep me out? I know no one knows for sure, but…Would trying again-- with a tutor maybe–make a huge difference? I know how hard it is to get in… . any wisdom here?

I doubt the math alone will keep you out. Regardless, admissions look at more than just your grades, so I hope you have good extracurriculars and essays.

if you can stand taking the SAT one more time, it would probably look a lot better ifyou could get your math to an even 700. Since you have 800s on CR and Wr, you could just practice math to increase your speed.

If you do enough math sections from the blue book and analyze the problems you get wrong, you will most likely increase your score.

When you took the SAT did you finish the test? did you lose a lot of time on a few problems or were you at a steady slow pace throughout? Identifying these things can help you improve your score. For ex. if you lost a lot of time on a few difficult questions, you might consider skipping them or working enough difficult ones so you don’t have to think about what strategy to use.

Good luck and definitely apply to Brown.

asianinvasion: Thanks for the helpful reply. Yes, my extracurrs are good_ I started a free tutoring service that really took off, and I am president of a number of political orgs. in and out of school. Also first clarinet in band and wind ensemble, and will submit a tape of piano–played since age 6. I hope these things help. I know lots of people have many of them. I appreciate your encouragement.

As far as the math, milkweed, time is surely my enemy. No, I do not finish, and I work slow. I also think this is cos I get really anxious and lose my train of thought. Untimed, I am scoring 800 on practice tests. Very frustrating! I will take it again in october, I think, and focus on pacing myself and reducing anxiety. Thanks for th encouragement. Do you go to Brown? If so, that is another mark in its favor for me. ( also asianinvasion)
