I’m currently in university, doing my undergraduate in mixed arts and sciences. It’s a pretty neutral program for anything and I’m fine with it, I’m not thinking of transferring.
The problem is, I have no idea what to do afterwards. It seems like everyone around me knows what they are going after except for me. It makes me have no motivation for school. I don’t even know what generic field I want. I’m not even remotely interested in the things I was interested in just months ago. I’ve considered like over 15 careers since the beginning of high school…I have no idea what I want. No passion. The worst part is I know I don’t have much interest in the medical field, which is where my family is expecting me to go.
So, I’m wondering…when does it actually click what you’re meant to do? Or are some people (like me) literally not meant for anything?
In short, it clicked for me after attending a bunch of info sessions on a ton of industries and talking to people in my business fraternity about what they do. Also, internships and minimum wage jobs in high school, as well as running a very small personal business helped me indentify what I liked and didn’t like. I was able to apply and compare this knowledge when I attended info sessions at school about the different careers.
If all else fails, I would not discount looking into the military.
I think you’ll receive varying answers from many different people, but when it clicks for someone is when they’ve had time to rationalize what they want to do.
You aren’t deciding the course of your entire life right now. Many people start out in one direction in college, do it for several years, then move into something else that they find interesting. FWIW, I majored in chemical engineering and am now doing regulation policy work. My H majored in finance and works in software development. Many adults joke that they are still trying to figure out what they want to do when they.grow up. Pick something you are interested in and start there. Don’t worry about finding the one thing you are meant to do.
