My D just got into her grad school of choice. When does she need to start worrying about getting an apartment in her new town? It has been so long since I have gotten an apartment I am clueless. She starts in August

Depends, what city? When I was in Philly I think I signed in May for an August 1 start date, but in NYC there’s often no point in looking until 4-6 weeks before the move in date.
Agree, it depends on the location. Sometimes the grad schools can provide support in terms of helping students find off campus housing so she may want to contact someone at the school. And congrats!
In my son’s college town, competition is fierce, and the “best” affordable apartments may be rented by the end of February for the following year. He is at UMD College Park, and “the best” are generally not that nice.
