My D has played viola in her school’s symphony orchestra for 3+ years. Because Orchestra is a graded class, it doesn’t seem appropriate to list it as an EC. However, there are many activities associated with orchestra that go beyond merely practicing assigned pieces and performing them within the school.

For example, the orchestra takes a yearly trip (e.g. Montreal, Florida, NY) to participate in workshops and perform, and they perform at local grade and middle schools. Symphony orchestra members are also required to participate in a variety of performance competitions, both within the school and state-wide. They take private lessons and practice to prepare pieces for these competitions. Many orchestra members are also involved in smaller ensembles (not a class), which perform at venues outside of school.

Which, if any, of these activities count as extra-curricular?
