When is 1st day Penn State accepts applications and what are my chances?

When is 1st day Penn State accepts applications? I called and they said September 1st is when they first start accepting. Since Penn State operates on rolling admission plan on applying very first day they start accepting, so plan to apply September 1st. Took SAT earlier got 1560 and took it again in June and results come at June 20th for that one. GPA freshman year to end of junior year is 3.33 uw and 3.5ish w. Had 3.1 uw and 3.25 w freshman year. Going to submit essay and Letters of recommedations as well. My ECs are Key Club 4 years, Track and field 3 years, SADD 2 years, Library Volunteer, and Worked local NABA basketball games concession stands How do my chances look for Penn State Main Campus??? Will post 2nd SAT score after results come back.

The applications open September 1st. The first rounds of acceptances don’t usually start coming out until late October. With that GPA paired with your SAT, there is very little chance you’ll get accepted into the main campus. And a small chance you could get accepted into the summer session for University Park. GPA is worth 2/3 of PSU’s decision. They also do not look at letters of recommendation, and the only essay is a ~500 word personal statement. The most likely scenario is you’d get accepted into a branch campus and would transfer to university park after 2 years.

Etuck24 - How much will applying September 1st help my chance? So PSU does not accept Letter of Recommendations??

“We do not require letters of recommendation.” [Apply: Penn State University Undergraduate Admissions](Steps to Apply - Undergraduate Admissions)

That basically means don’t send letters of recommendation. LOR’s usually don’t accompany an application to a large state school. Penn State sees more than 70,000 applications campus wide every year, and there’s no way to mull through 70,000 LOR’s.

Rather than applying the very first day applications open, which will make little difference, I would wait and retake your SAT/ACT one more time. You’re able to do that before the priority filing date of November 30th (or November first, PSU’s website changed and has made it less clear). The priority date is essentially the deadline, but because they operate on rolling admissions, there’s no official deadline. That’s what I did though, and I got my highest SAT score the last time I took it, which was the September offering of the test my senior year. Keep in mind though, that since GPA is weighted so heavily, you’d need a miraculous jump in score to be in a better position.

Your stats look pretty good for summer season. Some tips:

Be sure to reply yes to the summer season question.
Apply undecided.
Apply early. (before Nov 30)

Xtremepower - what is this summer season? Explain it to me.

[Penn State University - Office for Summer Session](Summer Session)

Penn State often accepts borderline students into their summer session if they request to be considered. This year had the highest number of students ever doing summer session. Its required of you to go if thats what you are accepted as. Although you only have to go once, the summer before freshman year, its basically a whole separate semesters worth of tuition and room and board. Students who go to summer session will then flow into the fall semester as everyone else. You earn something like 12 credits during a summer session.

On the application it asks if you’d like to be considered for Summer at University Park as your start date, if Fall University park is your first option and isn’t able to be offered to you. All you do is check the box, and you’ll be considered for it automatically.

If you get accepted for summer, occasionally you can change it to fall if you call the admissions office later, as maybe some spots opened up. However, if you have a declared major in the business school or engineering school, its not as likely you’d be able to do that.

Etuck24 - SO say I did check the summer session option when applying and got in for summer session. Am I allowed to go to another school I applied to like Duquesne or do I have to go PSU Summer session saying I got in for summer session there? Am I allowed to turn summer session down after getting accepted for it for PSU? Also does summer session PSU take whole summer? How long does it take to have it completed?

You are free to turn down the offer just as you would any other school. It is not an offer similar to an early decision. Think of it only as a provision to your acceptance. In order to go to school in the fall semester, you’d have to do summer session. There are two summer sessions at PSU. Freshman who get admitted to the summer session are under the second session, as the first starts in May, when most are still in school. The second session starts on June 26th. This runs through August 9th. Move in day this year is August 23rd for fall semester. So there is some down time before and after, but not much. The calendar is found here: [Penn State University - Office for Summer Session](http://www.psu.edu/summersession/oss_calendar.html#Summer_at_PennState_University_Park)

Etuck24 - Do the classes you take in that summer count towards your GPA say once you enroll in PSU Main for fall and start classes officially after summer? Also what classes you take in summer session?

You can search courses here under “Summer 2013” [Penn State University - Office of the University Registrar - Schedule of Courses: Course Search](http://schedule.psu.edu/search.cfm)

And yes these classes are real classes and will be on your transcript and go towards your cumulative GPA.

If I were you I would focus on creating an awesome personal statement and a higher SAT score. I got accepted to the main campus with a 3.3uw and 3.67w GPA. I probably got in because my SAT score was 2000+ and my personal statement was outstanding. Also, they take course load into account. I was an IB diploma candidate so that probably increased my chances. I applied in November.

I think that you can get into fall session of main if you work towards a higher SAT and a strong personal essay

If you look at the admissions bubble chart a 3.6 GPA and 2000+ SAT indicates likely admission to University Park for Bigmhyun. When the GPA drops to 3.5 or lower the expected SAT is even higher. You will really need to boost that SAT score. Good luck!
http://admissions.psu.edu/info/counselors/bubble_chart.pdf

Ehh, I would say 3.3 UW GPA and a 1650+ is good enough for fall if you apply undecided. (source: plenty of people have been accepted, check the 2015, 2016 and 2017 decisions thread)

If you choose a normal major like accounting, engineering, journalism etc, you need at least 1750+ and 3.5+ for fall.

If you choose majors like architecture, Musical Theater, meteorology you need 1900+ and 3.7+.

You don’t know what else was going on behind the scenes for those people. For a school that places 2/3 of its decision making on GPA, a low 3.3 needs something else to make it better, and a below average SAT score doesn’t seem to be it.

Do other schools have admissions charts online like this? This one is from 2010 though. I am sure things vary year to year.

I’m not really sure if applying earlier helps or not. I applied Nov 29th back in 2009 and got my acceptance to the main campus, without being required summer session, about 2-3 weeks later. My stats were around a 3.3uw GPA and a 1900 SAT. My ecs included Eagle Scout, Church youth group, and student gov’t. Applying to a less popular major does help. I got accepted into the Classics major. If you want to get into the Smeal Business College or Architecture school your stats will have to be higher because they are more competitive. Hope this helped a bit. Also, if any of you want to go into the liberal arts college look into the Paterno Fellows Program. It gives guaranteed acceptance to the honors college during your sophomore year provided you take a few honors credits and maintain a 3.4 in accordance with the honors college requirements.

Though I recommend raising that SAT score, just like everyone else, there is no telling if you’d be admitted for Summer or Fall. I was stuck in the Summer session even though I had 3.5 uw, 3.9 w and 2080 SAT. Their decision process is unpredictable.

^That’s pretty strange. Did you fail any high school classes or received a grade of D ? Post your SAT score breakdown. Was one of them in the 400s ?

I was accepted to smeal for fall with a 3.4 at the time gpa and 1910 sat. I applied early sept and heard back mid November. I sent my sat scores June of my junior year after only taking once. Best of luck!!
