Thanksgiving was so early this year. Fall is still here…my trees still have half the leaves. I’m not in the spirit yet, but it’s a lot of work for just a couple weeks.
I guess I’ll start this week, yet just not into it. Didn’t I just put this stuff away??.
I’ll wait till next weekend so we are officially in December … if the tree goes up too early it just starts to look a little sad by Christmas. But I have started to listen to sappy Christmas music now that Thanksgiving is over!
The first tree went up Halloween night in the living room since I was standing by the front door for hours anyway, handing out candy. It seemed like a good way to be productive while waiting. The family room tree went up last Sunday. The big hall tree goes up tomorrow. We love the lights and decorations and festive atmosphere they create. We’ve already had a little snow more than once, and are predicted to get up to 8 inches tomorrow. Might as well be all in!
Hopefully this week. We use artificial and I need help getting trees down from upstairs. So depends on when girls and maybe their BF’s can come get them down. H is no help and has breathing issues even if so inclined.
1st post for me…but love this thread. We are on the fence about a tree. New kittens last year, and travel at Xmas , no tree. This year, same cats, still kitten-like. They have killed all my houseplants and we know it will be a challenge to keep a tree standing and even non-breakable ornaments in place and not scattered about the house…Trying to figure out how to make it work.
Welcome,@machamom5! Been there with young cats. We put our tree up and don’t decorate for a couple of days. The cats explore it and then lose interest. Then we put unbreakable ornaments on the lower branches and let the cats explore some more. Then the good stuff goes on the tree.
We buy a live tree so we never get it until a week or 10 days at most before Christmas because we keep it up until almost Epiphany. We also don’t have a lot of room for it, so if it goes up too early the clutter/messy needles starts to bother me by the time Christmas arrives. I do, however, put up my outdoor garland and lights earlier, but not until at least the second week of December. I wait for a really nice weather day because we usually have one spell of it in December.
I think I’m going to skip a tree this year. I put evergreen boughs in the front planters today. I might get a wreath for the front door, hang the stockings, and call it “enough”.
If I can get a nice garland for the mantle, at a reasonable price without much effort, might pop for one of those.
In August I was complaining to my daughters about an issue I’ve been having with a neighbor for the past year or so. In exasperation, after trying to suggest solutions, which I shot down, they said we didn’t have to put up a Christmas tree if I solved the problem before they came home for the holidays.
I hate putting up a tree.
So that was all the motivation I needed! In less than two weeks I had the issue solved! So proud of myself!
Of course, now I feel guilty about depriving the girls of their Christmas tree, so we shall see. =))
Our tradition is to decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving. We put up our other decorations but bc Thanksgiving was so early we are holding off on live trees.
Ours is already up! Ha ha! It’s early for us, but my D is home from boarding school until Monday and then won’t be back till it’s almost Christmas. She wanted to help pick it out and decorate it, so here we are!
We have had an artificial tree for several years because of DH’s allergies. I think I will put it up next weekend. I picked up a wreath and poinsettia for the front, and hope to get the outdoor lights up this weekend.
We cut a live one from those cut-your-own lots, so we’ll probably wait until around the weekend of the 8th for the tree. I’ll start decorating next weekend. I’d like to enjoy the autumn decorations at least until December.
We moved to artificial trees about 5 years ago due to allergies, and ever since then the tree(s) have gone up Thanksgiving evening or on Black Friday (instead of shopping). Christmas is the favorite holiday for our children, and they go whole hog on the season…multiple trees, inflatables in the front yard, hand cut snowflakes in every window, cookies and other baked goods for the neighbors.
If I had my druthers, I’d just throw a wreath on the door a few days before Christmas and be done with it. I’m so tired of all the Christmas crap and got rid of almost all of it when we moved three years ago. However, my sentimental husband and son insist on all the fa-la-la-la-la, so I cave and help them decorate with what’s left (mostly an artificial tree) but NOT more than two weeks before Christmas and all the crap has to be put away on January 2nd. And absolutely no shopping or gift exchanges beyond the three of us. Humbug.
Just took the dog for his evening walk. Some houses on the street already have Christmas outside lights on. That means probably 5-6 weeks of lights. Overkill for me!
We get a cut tree and will likely wait until D2 comes home the weekend of Dec. 8. I will aim to get the candles in the windows and the outside lights out NEXT weekend. Decorate the mantle and staircase at some point - then call it a day.
I’ll admit to not being the biggest Christmas fan. Too much “holiday” for me. And don’t get me started on Christmas music…!
@abasket, I agree it’s just too long. I’m so sick of it after a month. The only reprieve is that I don’t have much shopping to do anymore, which I LOVE!
