When should I start worrying about...

I have been worrying about the SAT Reasoning test for a few months now. Suppose I get a good score (which is highly unlikely), and I wanted to apply to the really good universities (like Ivy League and MIT/Stanford). When should I start worrying about the other stuff, like the essay or teacher evaluations?

I do not want to start the essay to early, or it might just be a waste of time. Similarly, if I get one or two teachers to do the teacher evaluation, it might be a bit weird if I go to them later and tell them that I failed the SAT lol.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx.

bump bump bump…

you should start… right about… NOW!

no not really. let me clarify.

you never really have to worry about teacher recs because there’s nothing you can do about them. don’t bug your teachers or anything. if they like you, they like you and its usually pretty easy to tell. just make sure you give them the recs really really early (as soon as you know the colleges you want to apply for during senior year) so they have the time to write a good one.

as far as essays, i suggest investing some time reading up on what makes a good essay. don’t worry about writing one now, i would just spend time familiarizing yourself with the admissions process and understanding what not to write. there are many books out there, take your pick. i started my essays around the month of oct during my senior year and even though it worked out for me, i ran out of time towards the end and gave up a few applications. start the summer before senior year, but don’t expect to use any of those essays. those will just be practices.

^ Can you recommend any specific books/articles/websites that you found particularly helpful for essays?

on writing the college application essay by harry bauld is pretty nice although somewhat old. any book that has a high rating on amazon works though. i suggest going to the library and just browse through all the books they have on college essays (and don’t feel the need to read the entire book)

Will do; thanks.

I live in Canada, so I have to get my application in by January of my senior year (senior is last year, right?). Does this “application” include just the SAT scores, or including essays and teacher recs?
