Hey,
I’m a student from Germany and i’ll be in my junior year after summer break. I want to go to university in the US and obviously I will have to take the TOEFL and the SAT (I’m aiming for 2100).I’d also like to take 3 SAT Subject Tests. The problem is that we have exams and perfomance records all the time during junior and senior year which will count 2/3 of the final grade, so I won’t have a lot of time to study for the standardized tests during junior year. I could take the TOEFL and SAT in September/October of my senior year but I’d have 8 weeks of studying time MAX. Is that enough? I’m totally not sure whether I’ll have to study content of the SAT or just some strategies etc… Another possibility would be to study after graduation (june) , take the tests and apply to university. I’d have to wait one year though and have no idea what I could do during that time…
Please stop whining - everybody has a busy junior year whether you are in Germany, UK, US, etc.
Here is what we did:
Autumn Junior Year - PSAT in October and 2 SAT Subject Tests in December.
Spring Junior Year - New SAT in May and June - This was a really busy time as my kid was doing 4 very difficult AS levels from Mid-May to Mid-June. However, we designed a study plan from January which has worked.
Autumn Senior Year - SAT in October.
This so far has worked. Also, if you don’t do as well as you like on the Subject Tests, you can retake in November of Senior Year.
Oh and should I take AP tests? We don’t have AP classes in Germany…
No, you don’t need AP tests if you are following the German curriculum.
-
SAT no longer out of 2400 but 1600.
-
You should try to have all your testing completed by September/October of the year before you plan to attend. Waiting until the last minute will limit any time for retakes. Many applicants begin their testing Junior year. You cannot sit for the SAT and SAT subject tests on the same days, so you need 2 separate test dates.
-
The best time to take the SAT subject tests is when you have completed the comparable HS class.
-
If you decide to take a “Gap Year”, you can work, look for volunteer opportunities or internships related to your major to further enhance your application.
Thanks alot!
I will try and do that then…
But im intending to take the essay too so it is 2400 right?
The new scoring for the SAT:
Your total score is your overall score and is a combination of your section scores (see below). The highest composite score for the redesigned SAT is 800+800, or 1600. The average score is 1000.
Your section scores are the individual scores for the two main sections of the SAT: reading/writing and math. Each of these sections is scored out of 800, and they are added together to get your overall score.
The essay is optional in the redesigned SAT and will not be factored into your overall SAT score. The essay scores will be shown separately on the report.
Your essay, should you choose to write one, will be scored on three measures: Reading, Analysis and Writing (a good way to remember it: RAW). You will receive a score of 2 to 8 in each of these areas
Oh… okay, thanks!
