When stuff you love gets discontinued

OMG Dadof3: my mom is from England, where they have real gripe water. Her expat friend had her first D while still in England then came over here with her GI husband when the D was 6 weeks old in 1963. She had wicked colic. So the mom runs out of gripe water and takes the bottle to the local U.S. chemist (i.e. pharmacist) where she asks if he can make her up some gripe water since she can’t find any. He says he’ll try. When she goes back he says “lady! I can’t make this for you! It’s 40% alcohol!” They do carry a version of gripe water in Whole Foods but it’s a chamomile, fennel type mix.

limabeans: amazon has those simply fruit: [Fruit Roll-Ups Simply Fruit Rolls, Wildberry, 5-Ounce (Pack of 7): Amazon.com: Grocery & Gourmet Food](http://www.amazon.com/Fruit-Roll-Ups-Simply-Wildberry-5-Ounce/dp/B00437I4VI)

and how about regular fruit leather? That’s what I used to have when I was a kid. It’s usually in the aisle with raisins.

Here you go intparent:[Fruit Roll-Ups Simply Fruit Rolls, Wildberry, 5-Ounce (Pack of 7): Amazon.com: Grocery & Gourmet Food](http://www.amazon.com/Fruit-Roll-Ups-Simply-Wildberry-5-Ounce/dp/B00437I4VI/ref=pd_sim_gro_1) Fruit Roll-Ups Simply Fruit Rolls, Wildberry, 5-Ounce (Pack of 7) $18.97

Oops, sorry somehow missed RobD’s post! I agree that you can also find the real deal at places like Trader Joe’s.

Here are fruit roll ups that are REAL FRUIT and no added sugar. I believe I have seen them at Costco, but of course selection keeps changing so hard to know if it’s still there at any given time. I have also seen it at health food stores. Compare its ingredient list to that of the Betty Crocker ones that have added sugars & syrups.

Limabeans: Whole Foods has a line of fruit strips. 365 Organic Fruit Strips. Sell for about 49 cents each at the cash registers.

Roshke: Thank you so much for asking about china. After I posted about eBay, I decided to go see what they had in my patterns (I am 6 dinner plates short of a full 12 piece set; long story) On replacements . com they are $24/each plus shipping. There was a buy it now listing for 6 dinner plates for $9.99 + $20 shipping. $30 total! And I wouldn’t have gone to look if this thread hadn’t reminded me :)

RobD, is that for real? Now I know why I liked gripe water so much in the 60s; none of the adults knew or mentioned anything about alcohol, but based on my memory I later suspected it may have some. By the time I came to the US and went back for a vacation, the original had disappeared, replaced by a pathetic imposter. Thanks for posting the anecdote re your mom’s friend.

My mom and I got to talking about this tonight. She said a lady she works with told her that New Balance has opened their own stores and so they are taking them out of other stores…

^^^ RobD, That’s great! ReplacementsLtd can be expensive, which is why I was glad to get a relatively good price on whole place settings. I’ve checked Ebay and Amazon many times, but they are the only vendor I’ve seen see that sell my pattern (a Bernadaud). Very good idea to sign up for the alerts, though.

Dadof3: my mom assures me that the other time honored way of soothing a fussy British baby was to pop a Cadbury chocolate button on their tongue.

Thanks for the links! Colorado_mom: I stay away from those gels, although my brother relies on them all the time. I like to control my blood with something complex so my sugars don’t drop too low or jump too high.

And how about this other, long-forgotten bisquit-cookie. Remember those super thin square cookies that were like a raisin sandwich? I keep hoping to find them, but I can’t even remember who made them.

^ Are those Golden Fruit by Sunshine? I remember them very well. I can’t claim credit for remembering the name, though:

http://www.kingarthurflour.com/blog/2011/05/04/golden-memories-sunshine-raisin-biscuits-make-a-comeback/

I’m pretty sure Costco still carries the Simply Fruit roll ups. My dad bought a box about a month ago. Oh, that might be just enough time for them to discontinue those, too.

Oh I loved the Golden Fruit cookies! The Sunshine factory was in the next town over & I remember when it was closing. The closest thing I’ve ever had is from a Scottish butcher/ bakery in NJ. They’re called Cameron’s of Kearny, but they’re in Brick now. Of course that doesn’t help me in TN.

In the 70s H & i drank alot of Tigers milk “milkshakes” ( made w banana & ice cubes).
Yes i realize that it was just protein powder, but why isnt carob popular anymore?

They visit the Ben and Jerry’s Graveyard of discontinued flavors. I didn’t hear Wavy Gravy mentioned, but if you are in Vermont you can leave flowers…

limabeans, try the Stamford (or White Plains) Target.

TJ’s used to have the best bleu cheese salad dressing. It sold like hot cakes and disappeared anyway. :frowning: Costco carried a Milk Thistle based Liver formula…wonderful and inexpensive. Discontinued. Luckily I stocked up and have enough for at least a year.

RobD…guess I’ve got to go to Tennessee. (Should have done that today; H and I love Nashville.)

I’m especially annoyed because the Costco website will let you order over 40 kinds of soup online, but none of their Kirkland ones! What the heck???

Am I the only one who remembers (and loved) Team Flakes? One of the major cereal companies used to make it, then sold it to another major company which then discontinued it! I used to eat that EVERY day!
