I doubt she’s an idiot and I’d bet money she knows there will be a faction of women that will condemn her for broadcasting her thoughts. Clearly that was outweighed by her desire to say what she wanted to say.
To pretend that Bill Cosby is going through anything like Emmett Till did is just ridiculous and makes her sound foolish. It’s disrespectful to his descendants. The law was carried out here. No one is getting horrifically tortured, mutilated, shot in the head, and left in the river for being a 14 year old boy who allegedly whistled at a white woman.
No one is arguing that she has no right to speak. She can say whatever she wants, and also get criticized for it.
I don’t think it is gaslighting. I think it is an 75 year old woman angry at the world because her husband has fallen. Watching a woman who is a private citizen impotently threaten to sue over the outcome of a trial isn’t really that troubling.
You are right that we have been watching gaslighting politically, for many years before the last couple, if the latter is only when you began noticing. But that isn’t what is happening here with Mrs. Cosby, I think.
Yes, but several people have questioned why she might go public. I was just pointing out that there could be many reasons and that she has a right too. There are alotta people going public with alotta stuff. Some could be classified as silly…but people have the right to say what they want to say.
Even away from this case and the other reported incidents of Cosby drugging and sexually assaulting dozens of women, it’s not like their marriage was hunky dory, right? They were separated for a length of time and he was widely known to be a philanderer. He never was a great husband to her.
"Momof3boys: Yes, but several people have questioned why she might go public. I was just pointing out that there could be many reasons and that she has a right too. Is posting a Facebook post considered “going public” now? But you are correct; she can say anything she wants to say, just like anyone else.
"Nrdsb4: I can’t. Doing so indicates that she truly believes many MANY women who did not know each other colluded in a conspiracy of truly epic proportions. Every single one of them would have to be liars.
One victim? Sure, deny to your heart’s content. But almost 60? Nonsense.
She’s unhinged. Denial on this scale is one thing, but going on the offense in this manner is really beyond the pale. I’m thinking that she loved the lifestyle, prestige, and privilege his fame provided for her (not just the money), and now it has collapsed all around her. And that makes her very, very angry. "
I would view this differently. She is at the end of her life, and so is he, and I think after all this, that lifestyle, prestige and privilege mean very little now. I would think she is very angry not because of the “lifestyle and privilege and prestige” but because his legacy and their family name is now tainted and all of his early work will be forgotten. And she has a right to be angry at that.
I won’t speak to what she knew or didn’t know. None of us know this. Obviously, the jury has spoken as to what he did, regardless of what she knew. And she has to live with that.
Then she should be angry at HIM, not the prosecutors or victims.
Sheesh…
Is she really that savvy about the Constitution? I know she’s intelligent and educated, but are these truly her words?
Or, with sentencing pending, a hope the sentiment against him softens? Maybe attorney driven? Traditionally, isn’t the wife a typical pleader for mercy?
I don’t know. Usually, if you want to garner sympathy at this point, it would be about what a wonderful husband and father he is, coaches kids, is kind to animals, donates anonymously, volunteers at church, etc. Otoh, in big profile cases it’s not uncommon to research public sentiment, concerns, insecurities, etc. Maybe some distinct segment of the population does feel he was railroaded? And that women (in general) don’t want to hear about or face MeToo?
I think that’s absolutely the case for a certain segment of the population. There is a pervading attitude in certain circles that if a woman knows her rapist, then she for sure did something to bring it on herself, or if she did this or that, then she deserved it, or at least shouldn’t be complaining about it.
Nrdsb4: I don’t think that ANYONE in any circle believes a woman deserves it when a man attacks her. I don’t know where you get such a notion.
@TranquilMind, then you obviously don’t read the comments sections of articles on the subject.
No, I simply don’t take some anonymous outlier as evidence for a position.
ANYONE and outlier don’t mesh.
Anyone rational and willing to stand behind it. You know what I’m saying and are just nitpicking now.
These comments are not “outliers,” they are PERVASIVE. Just because you don’t feel a certain way does not mean that plenty of other people do not.
You said you don’t believe “ANYONE” holds those views. You are wrong. And there are entire societies on this planet where that is the prevailing attitude, not a divergent one.
Well, I don’t think they are rational but there are plenty of people who feel the way @Nrdsb4 describes. We’ve seen evidence of such on CC and there is no shortage of evidence of such elsewhere.
We don’t fight on word choice. There are people who feel a woman who finds herself in some sort of peril didn’t do enough to avoid that peril. In fact, “deserved” is a word often used in the past. Fault.
And many women turn away from issues because they simply don’t want to hear about it or need to react to it. Or they think too much fuss is being made.
Off track, I think.
Back to the OP, I do agree that Camille Cosby is angry that she can no longer hold up her head with pride for being tied to someone who once held so much esteem. Her kids are probably being shamed and shunned for their association with him. Yes, the legacy has not only been tarnished, it’s been obliterated. And the only one to blame for that is her beloved husband.
lookingforward:" We don’t fight on word choice. There are people who feel a woman who finds herself in some sort of peril didn’t do enough to avoid that peril. In fact, “deserved” is a word often used in the past."
That is just nonsense to blame the victim. Any attacker is the one solely at fault for his own actions. Period. Full stop.
That said, that is not the same as say, telling your daughter to not go out alone late at night and walk around. That would just be wisdom because of the world we live in, that has such unhinged people in it. It wouldn’t have been necessary in my mother’s youth, but it is good advice today. Now if one does go out and the worst happens, it is still solely the fault of the perpetrator who committed the action.
