when to take lstats?

DD is a college junior. Would like to go straight to law school, fall 2012. When should she plan on taking lstat?

If she takes it by june, depending on her score she will be able to apply to some of the priority admissions (Duke) in late august. If she is not ready by June 2012, she should definitely take the LSAT no later than october so that she could still have her application submitted early in the cycle.

thanks sybbie…one more question please: If she wanted to travel or work for a year, and start law school fall 2013, would she apply next year and defer start date? Or would it be better to apply a year later, in your opinion?

I think you need to look at the policies of each school she is considering as policies vary.

At some schools if you are accepted with merit $ and you defer, you give up the merit money.

Some schools will only allow you to defer to fulfill a commitment to Teach for america, americorps,. Some will let you simply defer but will make you sign a commitment that while you are on deferral that you will not create any new applications.

Your daughter can always choose to wait a year or two before applying to law school (mine did not go straight from undergrad). It is not unusal for students to work, do teach for america, americorps, or just simply work a job to pay down some debt before starting law school. Sometimes the work experience may be beneficial when it is time for them to do OCI for second year SA positions.

Some schools won’t allow you to defer at all unless you are part of the Guard/Reserves and become activated/mobilized by state or federal orders.
