Im currently a freshman in high school right now and Im aiming to get into an ivy league college so I was just wondering if anyone could give me any advice on how to take the SATs?
Like when I should start taking them and for what subjects?
And how taking PSATs would help on a college applications?
Thanks!

first of all, you’re a freshman. chill- you have plenty of time. you don’t need to start worrying about this stuff until junior year, or even thinking about it until sophomore year. but i’m guessing that’s not what you’re looking for so here’s some advice anyway:

PSATs have no result on college apps; colleges never see them but they’re used to national merit scholarships, which colleges will like. however that doesn’t count until junior year, so for the PSATs i’d recommend taking them as a sophomore to see where you’re at, then maybe studying if you need to in order to get over a 224 (that’s the highest cutoff, in some states you only need like a 210) or above to qualify you for national merit.

for SAT subject tests, only take them freshman/sophomore year if they’re relevant, for example if this is the year that you’re taking world history, consider taking the SAT in world history while it’s fresh in your mind. and just take them in the subjects that interest you. you have 3 1/2 years to pick 2 or 3 subject tests to take, so don’t worry about it now, just keep it in mind if there’s a subject you might want to test in this year.

for the SAT, the earliest i’d suggest taking them is fall of your junior year; that way, if you don’t get the score you were looking for you can retake them in spring of your junior year and again fall of your senior year if need be. if you’re going to do it then, start preparing over the summer; it’s probably all that you’re going to need. you really don’t need to start thinking about this now, but if you feel like you should be doing something to help you prepare, sign up for SAT question of the day emails, which will give you a feel for the types of questions and get you more comfortable with the format of the test.

so, basically, there’s absolutely no need to freak out right now. if you want to, sign up for questions of the day, and then just focus on keeping your grades up, developing outside interests, and just enjoying high school. :)

I agree with the above post. Do not worry so much about the SATs as a freshmen. I was like you in high school, and ended up taking the SAT too early when I was not prepared for it.

When I retook the SAT (when I was finally prepared for it), I scored a 2400. But this was not until October of my senior year in high school!

Okay, thank you very much!
I think I’ll wait until sophmore year before I start taking interest in taking them.
Could you please tell me how to sign up for them or apply to take a certain test?
I want to know just in case.

you can find out everything on the college board website, and through having an account you can register for the tests when you’re ready for them.
