Talking from personal experience last yr, we feel that UVA admits OOS based solely on numbers. We sat through numerous UVA sessions where they talk of the entire app, and a holistic approach. This may be true with in state apps, but OOS is entirely stats and GPA.

I have 2 kids who attend top schools and one was rejected from UVA last yr. We live in metro NY. 16 students applied to UVA from our school. 1 got in but never visited, used UVA as a backup to Columbia. Was not even sure where UVA was. The other got in last minute off the wait list, but never visited. We knew others who visited, had incredible resumes and were most likely better “holistic” candidates than the 2 that were accepted. PS: the first kid is at Columbia, the 2nd is faring ok.

I know this sounds like sour grapes; my apology. But my advice is to have good backups if you are applying to UVA OOS. UVA is a fantastic school, but due to application numbers, they cannot possibly approach OOS apps in a manner other than figures…Its the sad state of affairs with the electronic application process these days.

Good luck to the candidates.
