my friends are all taking SAT classes during the summer, but I don’t know whether I should or not. 'cause i’m not planning to take the test until january next year, and those prep courses are really expensive. so should i just take it when i have time during the summer, or wait until like november?

Firstly you mention expense. Is this an issue for you? Rather than take a course you might be just as wise to take some diagnostic practice exams and see how you do. Once you determine the area you need to work on purchase a few hours of private tutoring and make the most of your time & money. Review classes teach to the mean, take up a lot of time, cost about the same as some strategic help from a tutor. Good luck. Diagnostic exams are free basically.

I think that you should take it right before the test. For example, if a course will last a month; take it so that the last day of the course is the night of/ a few nights before the actual test.
That is helpfull because you would have the material fresh in your mind and you’ll take the test right away.

Hope this helps. good luck.

thank you!!

NEVER they suck

they help. a little help never hurt. right?

a little help never hurts but then y spend a large sum of money if u can do the same prep at home and get the same or even better results…

so I should self study during the summer and take the course right before the actual test? what do they teach you in those classes anyways? are there a lot of writing help?

nope… atleast i think go for the course atleast 2 months in advanc so u hav adequate time. i dont agree wit last minute prep… but then again thast just my opinion

If writing or critical reading is the area you need to strengthen…you need lots of lead time and lots of practice. Don’t wait for the last minute. Too much effort for a last minute fix or tweak.

I would say: yes. self study then take a course.

agree with hazmat.

instead of wasting your money on a prep class (EVERy SINGLe one of my friends who has taken one realized at the end that it was pointless) go READ the recommended list of books on collegeboard.com:

<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools;
then study the blue book like mad. that’s it.

ty everyone for the great advices! but how exactly does reading those books help?

“go READ the recommended list of books on collegeboard.com:”

Read any book, it doesn’t have to be the classics. There are some wonderful books on the College Board list, but there are some snoozers too. What you read is less important than reading something. Read an hour a day all summer long. Your score will go up.

if you read, you get familiarized with new vocab (even if you don’t look them up, you’ll somewhat know their meaning through context anyways)

the more you read, the faster you read, and the more prepared/relaxed you are for the CR (just like running…some are just born runners, but most aren’t - that’s why we practice running. The more we run, the faster we get; just like reading.)
