The weather is back to winter and depressing. I need a pick me up thread!
Sunday is plant watering day at my house. As I was watering my plants yesterday it dawned on me that somehow over the last couple of years I’ve acquired quite a few plants. They give me SO much joy. I decided to count them as I watered. 34 indoor potted plants. I did not count any vessels that I’m propagating cuttings for future plants for me or to give away - probably 10 of those.
Who shares my joy of indoor plants - the kind you have to water or take care of - and that grow.
Care to share some of your favorites? Any stories behind how you got them or how long you’ve had them or why you love (or hate) them???
I have 8 house plants - a combo of succulents, an orchid, two scheffleras and a large palm. One of the scheffys I’ve had for over 30 years. It was a house gift from my MIL for our very first apartment. The second plant is one of the original’s “babies”. My daughter and niece have their own cuttings from the original too that are all doing very well. It’s moved with us countless of times and at one point was so tall that it was traveling across a ceiling beam (we’ve since trimmed it down).
I also keep fresh flowers in a vase on the kitchen island throughout the winter for a pick me up.
Asparagus fern. I plucked this out of an outdoor plant in the fall and it has FLOURISHED on its own inside (sunroom). There is one stem that I need to cut - it’s over 4 ft long!
Monstera. This guy was probably 12-15 inches tall when i bought it about 18 months ago. It’s been repotted twice and I think it just LOVES it spot in this room. It’s probably 4.5 feet tall and at least 3 ft wide in some spots
This gal was one of those little 4-6 inch pots you buy at Kroger in the spring with little tiny flowers. Might be in the succulent family? My DIL gave it to me for Easter 2024. It almost died that summer but I decided to repot and see if it would revive. It now blooms twice a year and is at least 5x (maybe more) as big as when she bought it
Ahhh yes an umbrella plant! I have one too that I have had to cut a couple times - not as tall as yours though! I did recently propagate some of it - it rooted well and I planted it. The leaves still look healthy but no sprouts??
I have always loved houseplants. For the first time though, several of mine seem to be struggling. I know a few need repotting and I am waiting until it gets warmer and I can do that job out on the back deck. I’ll see what happens.
Not unusual for them to struggle a bit this time of year. Kind of like end of summer plant-struggling. They may need a boost and that replanting might make the difference.
I have two plumeria “trees” on the south-facing kitchen counter that I managed to root from the little sticks (one came from Hawaii, the other was an Amazon purchase). They dropped their leaves for the winter now, but should be back to their spring glory soon!
I don’t do much with my plants other than water them weekly. The first picture was a tiny plant D2 gave me few years ago. I do t have outdoor space, so I can only have I door plants.
Hello!!! Just saw this thread! Love all the big beautiful plants and orchids – there is no room for them in my house, so I have lots of smaller ones. Started with one orchid three years ago, now am at 140, not counting propagations that are going to friends and family. My sewing room is now also my plant room. I do a lot of hoyas and pothos – FB Marketplace is my friend for cheap starters and unusual hoyas. Our house faces north, so my biggest challenge is getting enough sunlight. (Sansi and Barrina FTW)
I find it great therapy, though the workload is constant these days. Have waded through lots of influencer cr*p on plant care, but ultimately found useful info online. Am working on reducing the headcount a bit, rehoming some plants that don’t bring joy and composting a few who just can’t survive in my environment.
My plants drive DH crazy. Feels the same way about my sewing. I keep both hobbies pretty well out of common areas in the house because it’s his space, too – but I’m not getting rid of things and activities that bring me joy because he doesn’t like them. BTDT, no more. If he had a hobby other than his job, he’d understand.
I was waiting for you to post! I know you have mentioned loving houseplants before!!! I bet it is BEAUTIFUL. Sounds like while they take some time they also bring you lots of JOY.
When I repotted my plants, some how little bugs got in the house. It took me few months to get rid of them. I had to use house plant spread consistently to get rid of them. I used garden safe plant insect killer, if you are interested.
Cant tell you much about these plants, although I know my H has told me, he is the keeper of the plants! I do like the smaller ones! I like the Lego bamboo my grandaugher gave me !
