looking at the list of alumni from comparable schools such as berkeley and uiuc on wikipedia, georgia tech is lacking in terms of the number of alumni in areas besides sports. Where is everyone?

Jeff Foxworthy and the guy who invented PCR

Georgia Tech’s list doesn’t include professors and endowed chairs, otherwise the list would be much bigger.

Also, UIUC and Berkeley are much larger than GT and have many majors that naturally create famous people, such as literature, broadcasting, dance, music, acting, and other performing arts.

The CEO of coke, Jimmy Carter (how many schools can say an alumnus went on to become President?), and the creator of the computer game Spore are the only big ones I can think of at the moment.

CEO of Coke is now Muhtar Kent–not a Tech alum, I don’t think. The head of CC Enterprises is John Brock, GT alumnus.

Other GT alumni: Head of WalMart: Mike Duke. Designer of the Jeep, the Miata, inventor of Elmer’s Glue, lawyer for the IPO for WD-40 (Reginald Fleet), etc. David Dorman was head of AT&T. Gary ____ was head of Mindspring. Deborah Willingham was/is the highest woman officer at Microsoft. Jan Davis went into space. Lots of other astronauts, too.

Also, please consider that Wikipedia, for all of its plusses, is not comprehensive or balanced.

If we want to hit the highlights, two Nobel laureates: Kary Mullis (Chemistry) and Jimmy Carter (Peace)

Notable Current CEOs: Coca-Cola Enterprises, Coca-Cola Company (different people), ADP, Walmart, Mayfield, Norfolk Southern, Waffle House,

Notable Former CEOs: Apple, Earthlink, AT&T, Days Inn, Citrix Systems, American Express, Federal Reserve Chairman

A whole bunch of politicians (as is expected for a state school) including a former president and a whole bunch of engineers, scientists, and researchers I don’t have time to get into.

What sets a UC-Berkeley or UIUC apart from GT is entertainers. GT has Jeff Foxworthy, Vern Yip from HGTV, and one of the GI Joe characters. That’s about it.

Opps. Chairman of the Board of Coca-Cola is a Tech alum (James Robinson, IM 57)

Here’s a big list
[List of Georgia Institute of Technology alumni - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](List of Georgia Institute of Technology alumni - Wikipedia)

includes 14 astronauts

FYI, Jimmy Carter did not graduate from Georgia Tech. He transferred to Annapolis where he got his degree.

23 colleges have US Presidents among their alumni (8 more had future presidents attend but not graduate).

5 law schools have US Presidents among their alumni (4 more had future presidents attend but not graduate).

You don’t have to graduate from a college to be an alumnus, only attend.
