D graduated from a 5 year SUNY program with a masters in special ed in 2014. She taught for one year at a public elementary school, volunteered for one year as a fellow with a UJA program, worked for a few months as a SEIT and is currently employed as a customer service rep for an educational technology company. I am freaking out because she’s already on her 4th job out of school and I have only had three post-grad jobs in my life.
Only one of my 3 kids has graduated so far. The other 2 are “taking their time.” Oldest graduated from a 5 year BS/MS program at Gannon University, a school we had never heard of before. He graduated in 2013, did a one year optional residency, and is now a physician assistant in neurosurgery.
@rosered55 thanks for sharing. I daydream of both my boys fully independent and me and hubby retired on a Florida beach somewhere
Son graduated (took 5 years) from a private college with a degree in CS and a math minor. He got a job as a computer programmer for a defense contractor within 2 days of graduating. He hasn’t started yet, still going through HR. He will be moving to northern Virginia.
S graduated from Harvard with an English major and a CS secondary. He is currently working at a CS internship in Boston with plans to go to LA in September to write comedy. He has an agent and a manager there. We’re taking a leap of faith with this and hoping for the best. My other two had very conventional career paths and were in their career jobs at this point. This son has always wanted to write comedy. He worked very hard as member and then president of the Harvard Lampoon the past few years. I know I have to support this dream, but the thought of him moving to LA is sad.
S1 graduated from Wake Forest with finance major, but followed his passion for football scouting/recruiting including a year in recruiting for a NFL team and then a stint with a footbball recruiting software startup. Now heading to UNC Chapel Hill for full time MBA program.
S2 graduated froom Elon last year with sports mgmt major - but was happy to accept full time employment with a real estate property mgmt firm.
Both fully independent. And let’s just say I can offer lots of advice for anyone whose offspring want to work in sports.
First daughter graduated from Pitt in 2014 with a mechanical engineering degree, from DTU (Technical University of Denmark) in 2016 with a degree in wind energy, and is working her dream job in Copenhagen.
Next daughter is starting her masters in mechanical engineering at Berkeley in August. Stay tuned.
D1 - 2012 grad GWU intl affairs/economics. Worked 5 years in federal consulting div of a large firm, heading back to school for MBA in the fall.
S - 2015 grad RIT video game design major - has worked for 3 years (one before graduating as a co-op) for a video game company, his dream job. Worked for 2 years in NYC where company is based, then moved to Seattle area and still works for them from home.
D2 - 2017 grad Pomona CS - will work for small tech firm in San Francisco.
All of them out and self supporting, my H just retired. I feel very blessed, but also have this sense that things are going too well …
2 Ds both graduated Rice 2016. D1 has CS degree and now works for startup firm in Seattle. D2 has bioengineering degree and works at research hospital in Houston. We’re fortunate they’re both self supporting and happy. As parents that’s all we could ask for.
S, class of 2014, state school with name few would recognize. Smart kid with top scores/grades who only went to college because we told him he had to be an adult (that is, move out & pay for his own stuff) if he chose not to go to college. Bio major; cum laude despite not putting much effort into college. Too busy playing in a band to do any research, so it’s not exactly easy to become a researcher like he wants. He is about a year into a job as a chemical analyst at a company that provides commercial water testing. He is more or less on his own … lives about 45 minutes away, pays for all but health care and car insurance … working toward being able to afford those things, as well. He doesn’t get paid very much. He hopes to get a better lab job once he has more experience. The rhetoric is all about STEM, but in bio you have to have at least 2 years experience … and if you are too unfocused to do it in undergrad, you aren’t exactly in demand.
He has talked about going to grad school, which is important given his goals. He did take the GRE and scored very, very well. He knows he needs more experience, though, to get into a decent school with the sort of research that interests him. We aren’t pushing him at all, because he needs to be ready. He is 25, and people keep telling me about young men who got their stuff together around 27 … hoping he will “find himself” in the next couple years!
^^ kelsmom, there is hope. S2 graduated in the class of 2012 (he actually graduated a semester early in Dec 2011). He wasn’t interested in going to grad school at that time, had a job in his field, and was supporting himself. He knew he’d need to go to grad school at some point, but made no moves to do so for years. When he got tired of his current job, but had trouble getting a different one because he was competing with candidates who had master’s degrees, he finally decided to go to grad school, took the GRE, applied last fall, and will be attending in the fall. He turns 27 soon.
DS, class of '14, graduated from top CSU school with a BS in Graphic Comm. He never moved back home and works for a marketing firm on the CA central coast. Pay isn’t great compared to the big cities but he has a side job with his alma mater that keeps him busy and happy there.
DD, class of '16, graduated from a very small southeast state school with a degree in government and just finished her first year of law school. This summer, she is working at the DOJ in environmental law. Next summer, she’s hoping for a big law job. She’s not sure which in area of law she’d like to eventually practice but she would love to stay in CA or work in DC.
DS got his B.A. in Human Biology (2016), and about to get his M.S. in Computer Science (2017) from Stanford. In July, he will be starting a one-year residency program at Google Brain doing research in deep learning.
DD graduated from state flagship university in ChemE last spring, worked at a water plant as an intern for 6 months and then got a job in the bio pharm industry in San Francisco. Self supporting the day after she graduated, lives in the Presidio area with 5 friends (2 in Finance, 3 engineers), seems to be having a good time. Young, single, good looking, big city …yea I remember those days.
@rockvillemom I might take you up on that. DS2 is at Georgia Tech, has been working with a basketball analytics startup doing some really cool stuff that makes guys jealous. He’s also president of the GT sports business club, networking with pro and college execs. He might want to head down that path.
DS1, from NY, graduated Alabama in electrical engineering 2016. Now a top secret engineer at Boeing in St. Louis.
Wow some of these jobs sound so interesting and impressive!! @rockvillemom I may also take you up on your offer. My S is studying statistics and loves sports! @Chardo what a great job for your S2
S graduated from the University of Mary Washington in 2014 (a year late) with a degree in business/accounting. After jobs at Five Guys and a grocery store, he is now a staff accountant at a health insurance company. Totally self-supporting! =D>
