Where are your college graduates working (C/O 2013-2017)

I’m curious to know what recent (c/o 2013-2017) college graduates are doing after their undergrad. Please list school, year and degree as well as what type of work they are doing now (or going to do).

Ithaca College 2013, degree in Integrated Marketing from the Park School. Now working in Corporate Marketing at a software company.

Wellesley College 2015, degree in Geosciences and Astronomy. Starting Ph.D. in Geology after working two years as a research assistant doing computer modeling at a research institution.

@fendrock very impressive! Did they fly the nest immediately after graduating?

D1 graduated in 2013 from a small private university with a concentration in art and writing. She is living in NYC and working as a server and freelance writer.

D2 graduated in 2015 from an LAC with a double major in economics and mathematics. She is finishing a two-year stint as a research analyst with a quasi-governmental organization and will be starting a Ph.D. program in economics this fall.

@CALSmom, my Ithaca grad moved out in the October after graduation, my Wellesley grad started her research position in July after graduation, so neither was under our roof for very long.

Our DD graduated in 2013 and is still a starving artist. She is still trying to get better treatment for her chronic health issues so that she can have more stamina and be able to have more predictable stamina to draw upon.

D was college class of '13, but graduated in 7 semesters so actually Dec '12. English major, works at a major publishing house in NYC. Planning to apply this fall to MBA programs.

@HImom I’m sorry about your daughter. That’s tough. Hope she gets better

D2 was a 2016 graduate. She is working more as an intern that will help with her law school application next year. It is for 2 years and the pay is sufficient for her to get her own place, but she is living at home to save some money. I wouldn’t mind if she were to live at home while going to law school (if in NYC) because I travel so much anyway, but I think she is anxious to get out on her own.

@oldfort was it always her plan to go to law school? My S just finished his first year of college and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how his post undergrad will play out. Will he end up back home for a spell? Will he land a job close to his school (East coast). Will he land a job related to his major. Ahhh!

Yes, it’s challenging but we are glad she has a very positive attitude and is able to help others with cinema projects as stamina permits. We are fortunate we are able to support her financially.

It was always D2’s plan to go to law school. Her whole college curriculum was geared to that. What is in flux is whether she would go into private or public sector.
D1 also always knew she was going into IBanking.
One thing I do know is both of them would rather be on their own rather than living at home.

@HImom that’s great. I have relatives and their oldest son has a chronic health issue which lands him in the hospital every few months it seems. He can’t hold down a job due to anxiety over his condition. He’s 25 and lives at home; it’s been financially stressful for his parents as they have two younger kids to support and the mom has put her career on hold to be home to care for the oldest son

We are relieved that S seems to have overcome his chronic health issues and is happily, productively employed at the same employer he was hired by in 2/2010. He’s an EE with the fed govt.

It would be very stressful if we didn’t have the finances to be sure we can support D for the rest of her life. We feel very fortunate. So far, we haven’t tried to get her into any programs and at this point, I’m not sure she’d qualify for any anyway and aren’t sure what programs might be appropriate. The one thing we did succeed in that has relieved me greatly was getting her to remain on H’s family BCBS policy as a disabled dependent. That was a major struggle.

Tufts - 2014 International Relations
two internships at NGOs, second one offered him a job. He worked full time till he finished up the project he was working on, but felt that they were a pretty dysfunctional organization. He took the test for Officer Training School (Navy) and almost a year later he started Officer Candidate School. He’s now a newly minted ensign getting another six months of training before he will actually be working, working. Will probably alternate between ship board duty and desk jobs.

@CALSmom , even though my children are older than yours and have graduated and are working, I can relate to your worries. Both my daughters are mostly self-supporting but I still pay for health care for D1 (including her high-deductible health insurance) and I know that money will be tight for D2 once she’s in grad school; the program is fully funded (yay!) but I assume there won’t be excess for things like travel back here on occasion. I worry whether D1’s knees and arms and psyche will hold up in her restaurant job and whether D2 will tolerate grad school. I think often of my 89-year-old mom’s sayings, “It’s always something” and “Little kids, little problems; big kids, big problems.”

S1 – BSCS Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from Rice 2011; entered Ph.D program in Computer Science at University of Washington and left after getting Masters; working as Software Engineer in San Francisco

S2 – BSBA Entrepreneurship, Marketing and International Business from Washington University in St. Louis 2013; CEO and jack of all trades for a start-up in St. Louis that he sold in 2014; working as a UX and Product Designer in San Francisco

So 2 very different sons with different interests and paths now working less than 1/2 mile from each other in related fields

S2 environmental science major working in the horticulture industry, contemplating law school for water resource law.

Not that you asked, @momofthreeboys, but your post made me think of one of my state’s law schools, Marquette, which has a growing water law program. Good luck to S2. I hope he pursues this area.

D graduated from a small LAC in TX with a biology major/French minor in 2013. After failing to get into dental school/working as a dental assistant for a year, she started art school in Europe. She is graduating next week, and will be teaching sculpture part-time, in addition to another (agro-tourism associated) job. Neither pays much, but she will be able to support herself, and continue with her own art, hoping to sell some paintings. S graduated in 2016 with a CS degree from UT Dallas. He is working as a software developer. Another son with a 2010 liberal arts degree has been teaching at the same private high school since he graduated. He just got married last week.
