Where can he get accepted?

My son had terrible grades in high school and a drug problem. Despite that, his SAT is respectable - 1330 - 670M, 660V. He is now finishing his first year at a community college and has a 4.0. He also works 24 hours a week. He’s really turned things around and he wants to go to the best school where he can get admitted. Also, is it worthwhile to take 12 credits this summer at say, a Penn State? In other words, would a 4.0 there give him additional credibility?

Any ideas on how high he should aim?

Hopkins?
Middlebury?
UVA?
UNC?
Dartmouth?
Queens (Canada)?
McGill (Canada)?
Toronto?
Franklin and Marshall?

I know that some of these schools are unlikely, but that’s the idea, to stretch?

put Cornell on the list. They take many transfers from community college.

At many schools after a certain number of credits, they don’t even request a HS Transcript. Look at the transfer requirements for the individual schools. I would think the Penn State classes would be good. It would give him an idea how CC compares to a 4 year college, an possibly a professors for reccomendations.

Also some community colleges have agreements with 4 year colleges, so one is less likely to lose credits. For example, I have a relative that attended a SUNY community college and then went on to a SUNY 4 year college, and all credits were counted. He swears by this route, as the quickest and cheapest way to go. He is now very successful in the business world. I also know of someone forced last minute to attend a community college in NJ (father lost his job just before college was to begin). She spent one year there, and out of a full course load that year, she told me that only one class was accepted towards graduation at a 4 year NJ state school. I think the best route would be to get transfer information from the junior college advisor.
