Where can I double major in Film/Theatre?

I’m a junior in high school this year, set on double majoring in both film and theatre (theatre mainly being the production, direction, management, general or technical aspects). Location is important as I really want to be near a major Film/Theatre hotspot,a lot of places don’t seem to allow for these majors to be combined but i’m already at my associates and could likely complete my degree in 2-4 years regardless of how busy my Majors are. I love the look of SCAD but would prefer something similar but in CA or NY…

Note that if you want to double major in film and theater that neither program will be a BFA; most likely each program would confer a BA degree.

Consider doing a major (Stage & Production Management) and a minor:

So you need to decide if you want to do a bfa or a ba. The BFA programs in Design and Production are full time programs even without “academic” classes. Film programs are similar. It is not possible to do full degrees in both. You can major in theater and film at schools that have BA programs. I suggest looking at the graduation requirements for BFA D&P at SCAD or UNCSA

Sarah Lawrence organizes its curriculum into four major areas of study. By choosing Creative & Performing Arts, you could emphasize film and theatre such that this would be equivalent to a major in each.

It would seem that you can do this at USC. You can certainly do a major + minor in this combination there.

You could consider a liberal arts college, but as others have said, this would be a BA degree rather than a BFA. I think Wesleyan in CT has a really good film program for a LAC, and also a theater major. Of course, it is 1 1/2 hours to NYC but closer than lots of places.

UBC has a combined department, and Vancouver is a hot spot in its own right. Theatre and Film Undergraduate Programs | University of British Columbia

Op said they are interested in design and production. There are lots of programs that will train actors for the stage and film but not film production and theater d and p. It is just so much

Yes, I saw OP’s interests. I clicked through to the link, before sharing it, and saw this:

…so that seemed to pass the first filter of offering what the OP wants.

Of course, we don’t know enough about the OP to know what programs might fit; I was just running a possibility up the proverbial flagpole.

Purchase College, which I’d recommend based on the OP’s criteria, states this:

SUNY-Purchase website states:

“Please note that not all portfolio programs will automatically allow a dual major.”

“Please note that dual major within a performing arts program may require faculty approval within your conservatory.”

Most of the top film programs have so many requirements and demand so much time in and out of class that double majors are mathematically impossible outside of a few majors.

Some schools offer dual film and business options over five years. NYU only has about 8 spots and one must apply as a freshman or sophomore I think. Syracuse offers a dual Newhouse (film) and Whitman (business) degree and you apply for the dual degree at the time you are applying for admission.

At each school you will have to see which of the majors have fewer requirements you can shoehorn into your packed film or theater schedule.

The odds of being able to do both film and theater majors are basically zero at a top program for either. The only option would be a minor.

Between theater and film you would have to pick a pathway and center your applications on this choice. In some cases, you would be able to add another academic major from one with fewer requirements.
