DS is going to play a piano solo with the school orchestra, and he’s supposed to wear all black. He has black dress pants but no black shirts. I’m wondering where to find one. I saw a few black dress shirts on Lands End, but they had white buttons. Should he wear a tie? Black tie on black shirt might look strange. Or a more casual shirt if he doesn’t wear a tie?

My son wears black button down shirts with black dress pants for performances. I got the shirts at macys. They are available online too. My son has this one http://t.macys.com/shop/product/geoffrey-beene-non-iron-sateen-solid-dress-shirt?ID=1285000&CategoryID=20635&swatchColor=Black#fn=COLOR%3DBlack%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D106%26ruleId%3D%26slotId%3D4

Amazon - we like Calvin Klein slim fit - he has one that is no wrinkle - I’ll look for a link

Black shirt and skinny black tie, matte not shiny
Black shirt and skinny black grosgrain bow tie

We just went shopping for performance clothes for D’s upcoming dance show at H&M. We found a number of black shirts for both boys and girls there. I’d bet you could find something, too. The quality may not be the greatest, but there’s a good selection, and the prices were very reasonable.

H and M. My musician kid gets his shirts ther. He also has some nice turtleneck and crew neck shirts he wears to perform. No buttons at all.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I love the Geoffrey Beene and the Calvin Klein versions. I haven’t heard of H & M, so they must not have stores around here.

The GB isn’t shiny, right, zoosermom?

I will look for a skinny matte black tie. DS would never consider wearing a bow tie, although I would love it!

We have had luck with our slender S at Express that sizes for different body types and has perpetual sales and markdowns. We have found it best for S to try on the clothing as he’s tough to fit properly and I’m tired of returning items.

I ordered the Geoffrey Beene and the Calvin Klein from Macy’s, and a skinny black matte tie. Thanks so much for all your help!

I’m wearing one right now, from Van Heusen. You should be able to find them anywhere that sells dress shirts, which would mean every department store and menswear shop.

Thanks, Chardo. The only places I buy shirts from for DS are LLBean, Lands End, and the Gap. They don’t have much in the way of black shirts. Fortunately, CC came to the rescue and two styles are on the way to me!

My DS likes a slim fit so it isn’t all “billowy” when tucked and also looks good untucked for a slightly more “jazzy” look. I like shirts that come out of the drier looking pretty good.

I’m all in favor of minimal ironing, too, saintfan!

Most local tuxedo shops carry a 65/35 poly cotton black dress shirt. This is not a tuxedo shirt but a regular dress shirt. They will retail between $25-$35.

Good luck to your son. If your son has piano solo, you’ll have no problem spotting him from the audience. (DS played sax, and with all kids dressed the same it was often hard to find him. I had a trick to look at the feet. He would be the one with tht tapping foot. )

Even though I prefer all cotton, it’s a good idea to buy no-iron or wrinkle resistant for kids. My sons have many shirts from Express, but I’m not sure why they do when mom’s not around to iron them. They wound up with many because one recent year leading up to Christmas they offered them for less than $25 each, when regular price is $59ish.

Did your shirts arrive? How do you like them?

An update - I ordered two of the shirts that were suggested here from Macy’s - the Geoffrey Beene and the Calvin Klein slim fit (link here is to Amazon, but Macy’s had it, too). Both shirts looked great - the fabrics were matte and dark black. The CK slim fit was perfect, and I had ordered two of them, along with a CK skinny black tie. The GB was too big in the body, it had much more material around the waist and under the arm, even though the neck and sleeve length were right. So I returned them.

The performances are over now and they went very well! DS has gotten a lot of recognition for playing a very difficult, 16-minute long piano solo, and he knows more kids at school now. He’s been asked to play in a benefit that one of the student clubs is putting on soon.

Thanks again for all your help with this!

Yeah! Yes, my DS doesn’t like a shirt that is “billowy” in the midsection. I should order more myself.
