Where can I find this information?

My DD is having a difficult time making a decision between two schools. Her desire is to major in International Studies and Political Science and then go on to law school. Her dream law school is Georgetown. How can I find out which of the two undergrad schools she is currently considering has a better record for sending grads on to law school, in particularly Georgetown?

I would suggest calling the schools directly and asking them where their grads go to law school. You could also ask Georgetown Law School, although a lot can change in four years.

splashmom,

You are asking a question that does not have a good answer. Consider:

What does “better record” mean? Higher percentage? Some schools discourage weaker students from applying to professional schools, upping their percentage.

what is the relevance of “better record” unless you controlled for the quality of the students applying? We don’t have access to such data.

Now, what you could focus on:

quality of the pre-professional advising. Do they have a dedicated law school advisor? What prep/coaching do they offer?

LSAT prep classes on campus?

general academic atmosphere of the campus. Pre-prof? Party? Just survive 4 years and get a job?

Good luck.

My daughters choices are down to Univ of Colo, Hendrix and Centre with Hendrix being the favorite. She also intends to major in International Studies and then to pursue a graduate degree. She will be flying down for a visit this weekend. Everything we have read or heard indicates that Hendrix students are very successful in the Grad school admission process. We are looking to get her a broad/solid foundation on which to build and Hendrix seems to meet all the criteria. This probably doesn’t help much but you are not alone in your struggle to choose.

Splash,

I agree with newmassdad, that there are so many variables and the biggest one being that you will have no idea as to what the application pool for georgetown law will look like 4 years from now (including how many students from either college will apply to georgetown law at the same time as your daughter). Kids also grow and change over time, she may get half way through and find that she does not want to do law or she does not want to do law at georgetown.

No matter what school she attends, her focus is going to have to be on getting the best GPA that she can and turning in some really great LSAT scores. Her best bet is to get matirculated and get through freshman year. Everything else will eventually fall into place.

Thanks, all. I knew I could count on the folks here at cc to have some great information and advice. I know that Centre has pre-law advisors as well as a law society and a mock trial team. DD has received information in the mail about these things. I cannot find anything about pre-law advising or a mock trial team at Hendrix, but I do know they are very involved politically. I have e-mailed her admissions counselor there so maybe she can give me the scoop on that. I’ll let you know what DD decides.

Amanda, I have heard that several students have had to make the choice between Centre and Hendrix. They are both such great schools. Let me know what your daughter thinks of Hendrix after her visit. When we visited for the first time last fall, we were very sure that is where our DD would land. We went back in February for the Hays weekend and had an equally fabulous time. She took an overnight visit at Centre last month and was very impressed there, too. My husband and I are so torn. We absolutely loved everything about Hendrix, but we love Centre, too, and it’s closer to home. She is having such a tough time right now with her decision. DH and I are trying to be neutral by giving her a list of comparisons and allowing her to mull them over without advice from us.
