We are looking for song possibilities for girls’ trio - for upcoming high school Literary competition… Where does one find them? Are there any websites? Does anyone have recommendations for girls trios?

Hi there -

I don’t know Literary Competition, as we don’t have that in my area (which is why I hadn’t responded to your PM yet) - but good MT trios for girls include:

Somebody’s Eyes - Footloose
Sing for Your Supper - The Boys from Syracuse
He’s A Ladies’ Man - Good News - girls’ ensemble number, but in 3 parts
Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now - Hairspray - probably will be overdone
My Strongest Suit - AIDA (can be done as a trio) - probably will be overdone
My Boyfriend’s Back - Jersey Boys arrangement - and there are many other 60’s girl-group songs like this
What More Do I Need - Saturday Night
Omigod You Guys, or Positive - Legally Blonde (the music isn’t yet published but I have it)
She’s In Love - the Broadway Little Mermaid (the music isn’t yet published, but I have it)

Those with content that might be too mature or controversial are:
Make Him Mine - Witches of Eastwick
You Could Drive a Person Crazy - Company
Black Boys, OR White Boys - Hair
Storms’ A Brewin - The Great American Trailer Park Musical (which is basically a spoof of the pop song “It’s Rainin’ Men” - also a good choice)

Some trios and other songs that could work for 3 girls, although not originally intended as such - a little creative rearranging could make these dynamite choices (if you’re allowed to do such rearranging):

Maybe Leavin’s Not the Only Way to Go - Big River
Some Other Time - not a trio, really a sextet - On the Town
Near To You - Damn Yankees
Shadowland - The Lion King
The Diva’s Lament - Spamalot (you could have a trio of competing divas! )

Since I don’t know the style/genre required for Literary Competition, these suggestions might not be at all helpful - but they’re fun! :)

I am interested in knowing why people are singing at a literary competition! :)

What IS a literary competition (I mean in this context…singing)?

Although originally for 3 men, there’s no reason that “Fugue for Tinhorns” from Guys and Dolls can’t be sung by 3 women.

The state of Georgia has a high school Literary competition…first at the Regional, then if you qualify…State level… categories include some of the following: boys and girls solos, girls’ trio, boys quartet, speaking, boys and girls acting, essays, etc. For the vocal competition, 2 contrasting selections are required. One usually is a classical piece, the the other can be a more contemporary one… I just am having a hard time finding possible selections for the girls’ trio to suggest to our Literary rep - a teacher at the high school.

mrdutt, can you explain what the “literary” component is? In other words, do the songs, monologues or scenes for acting, etc. have to have some relation to, well, literature? Or is the term “literary” competition simply a misnomer? As soon as you said “literary competition,” I thought of the musicals “Jane Eyre” and “Little Women.” But it seems I am thinking of this wrong and it is really a performance competition with not much relation to literature as most pple think of it.

I don’t even know if you need a song from the MT repertoire. Also some duets could be done as a trio.

Some trios include:

At the Ballet from A Chorus Line
Little Shop of Horrors from same
Sing for Your Supper from Boys from Syracuse
Make Him Mine from Witches of Eastwick
Look at Me from Witches of Eastwick
I Wish I May from Witches of Eastwick
Three Little Maids from The Mikado
Factory Girls from Parade
Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy
Gotta Get a Gimmick from Gypsy
I Could Drive a Person Crazy from Company
Dreamgirls from Dreamgirls
Friendship from Anything Goes (could be all female)
Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now from Hairspray (could be done as trio)
Matchmaker Matchmaker from Fiddler on the Roof
One Night Only from Dreamgirls
Dancing Queen from Mamma Mia
The Ladies Singing Their Song from Baby
Together Wherever We go from Gypsy (could be all female)
Starting Here, Starting Now from same (could be all female)
I’m Bluer Than You from My Name Will Always Be Alice
Old Friends from Merrily We Roll Along (could be all female)
All Girl Band from A My Name is Alice

songs from the 60’s like:
Baby Love from the Supremes
I’m So Excited from the Pointer Sisters
Be My Baby by Ellie Greenwich (in Leader of the Pack Musical)
Da Doo Run Run by Ellie Greenwich (in Leader of the Pack Musical)

Oooh soozie’s post made me think of a GREAT trio - 3 Little Maids from The Hot Mikado, which is a jazz version of the traditional Mikado - it’s so cool! :)

I’m from Georgia, too, so I know exactly what he is talking about. The “Literary” name for the competition does refer more to the English language related events: spelling, essay, extemporaneous speaking, oral interpretation, etc. But they also include boys quarter, girls trio, and boys and girls solo.

MrDutt, I’ve watched our trio a couple of times and seen some other groups. I can’t help you much with the classical selection, but you’re right about the second piece being something a little more fun, although not necessarily from MT. Last year the winning trio from our region performed America from West Side Story. But also think along the lines of things done by girl groups, like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Boyfriend’s Back, etc. I’ve also seen SSA arrangements of songs like Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend, too. Go to a website for a music publisher, like JW Pepper, and look for selections for girls groups.

How about “Friendship” from Anything Goes?

Some of those songs are in the above posts.

Just listened to Three Little Maids from HOt … great! Thanks! Thanks everyone for the help! You guys are super…

soozievt and CoachC you are amazing! Really thoughtful, thorough answers to a the question.

Just a question to CoachC…or anyone else for that matter… do you happen to have any music from “Ruthless”
(other than Born To Entertain) … or any music from “Working” (other than the vocal selecitons… I need the score with the choral parts). Maybe we should start a thread about trading sheet music. I am sure that in entirely legal.
