<p>agree with uclover. unless he’s applying engineering. For any engineer applicants, no matter how good, the best you can get at UCLA/UCB is a reach/match estimate because its so competitive. </p>

<p>ok in respond to that comment, let me explain why UCLA have such a screw up system. You might be outrage as I am, or this could be your ticket to a UC school (even if u underserving) As you all know (if u live in Cali or did watch cnn) the people of California had voted to eliminate racial quotas in government jobs. And since UC is state schools, they are feeling the impact. Also you guys might have heard that the Presidents at UC doesn’t like SAT1 very much (due to some heresay of “racial inequalities”, therefore they are counting SAT II twice as much as SAT 1. Now here lies the problem. Numerous Spanish (chinese and korean among them) take the SAT II spanish, korean and chinese. Well since it is their natural language they easily ace the test and have an 800 which is then multiply by two and what u get? yes! a 1600…outrage yet?..UCLA would take that score, and disregard how screw up all their other standardize tests are. This create a disproportionate system of how many unqualify students goign to a “top notch” school like UCLA.
and just to prevent anyone from accusing me as being a white racist, i am a minority who is against affirmative action.</p>

i forgot to explain that since Cali have the anti-discrimination base on race law, the Presidents at UC found the loop hole to by pass it. No one can question their criteria for choosing students, that why they double count SAT II (especially language, as mention above). Affirmative action is a very very henious system, even though I benefit from it, I reject it completely. I had refuse two different four years scholarships from two different universities, they gave it to me because im a minority.

your friend stats are amazing, but his ec is a bit weak especially in the volunteering department. However, with his score he would no doubt get into all the UC schoo and CalTech, standford however is a big reach. I wish him the best of luck.</p>

<p>I dont know what you mean “hearsay” about racial inequality and the SAT. Theyve done studies, all conclusively showing that non-whites are at a distinct disadvantage.
Furthermore, if the system of looking at SAT-IIs more did not work for the university, and professors complained and treads in alumni success and student drop out rate showed that incoming classes werent as bright as compared to students who had high SAT-I and low SAT-II, than im sure the UCs would junk their system and revert to using primarily the SAT-I.
Unfortunately, for your argument, this is not the case. Students who performed poorly on the SAT but showed an incredible amount of knowledge and potential with their high II scores, are turning up just as bright and successful as their white, high-SAT peers. </p>

<p>You also overlook the ineherent value that having a racially diverse student body has for a university. It improves the understanding, global perspective, and respect for people of all races. You may try to poo-poo this, but many UC grads will attest to this, and its partially responsible for the high level of racial and ethnic tolerance in the state of california. </p>
<p>Also, your SAT-II language thing doesnt work. Obviously, if a student has low scores in the writing, verbal, math, and math IC or IIC, but just a high score in their third II, they wont be accepted. They could, however, be accepted with a High writing score, good match IC score, and low SAT I.
The reason is also because the number one complaint from UC faculty about incoming classes is that students today arent prepared to write essays as well as they should be. So the writing section is given most thought. (The UC’s attitude on this is the sole reason why there is an essay on the SAT-I now.) Performance on the SAT-II writing is much more indicative of verbal skills than ability to understand what jovial is to opulent as ostentatious is to _____.</p>
