where can my friend get into with these stats?

my friend was wondering which school he pretty much can get into …

stats:
4.3 w gpa
2330 sat
800 biology sat iic, 800 math iic,
5 on ap lit, 5 on ap lang, 5 in ap bio, 5 in ap chem, 4 in ap physics, 5 in ap environmental science, 3 in ap german
he is drum major at school
+200 service hours volunteer at hospital, retirement home

he was wondering about the uc’s, some prestigious privates, et.c.

are u kidding me? he’d be competitive at all schools.

the problem with prestigious privates is that chances are that to get in one you need to have more than just the stats, and frankly 200+ service hours I don’t believe will cut it. he could get into most 25+ on US News

He should be able to get into most all UC’s. It’s unpredictable at UCLA and UCB no matter what anyone says.

are you kidding me? 200+ service hours won’t CUT IT?!

LOL, most people have 0, over 100 is unheard of.

EndersGame2323:

actually 100 hours is not unheard of. in fact, it is quite common especially for schools that require service hours. also, there are a ton of organizations that are based on service. Nonetheless, 200 hours is nothing to cringe about, but again if that is the only ec that may be problematic at HYPSM.

HYPSM? wats that?

Harvard Yale Princeton Stanford MIT

I’m sure he has more ECs. They all do.

yeah 100 hours is not that unusual. i volunteered at a hospital and they said you had to have at least 100 hours for them to even consider you and recognize you as a volunteer.

what’s a 2330 sat?

think of it as a 1550

Many schools require community services hours of at least 50 hours just to graduate. My D’s school has an award for community service at graduation and generally the recipient has 1000+ hours. Retirement home is fine but for the top schools he/she needs to maximize that experience: computer tech, woodworking, research project, oral history etc. Hanging out with the oldersters won’t cut it.

Very good grades ec’s etc but, he will be compared to other students in his high school.

Is he is the top 5-10% of his high school? then he has very good chances everywhere.

Even if the school does not rank, colleges can compare him with other applicants from the same high school.

For top UC’s what i noticed is this: say they take 10 students from your high school, then they will probably take the best 10 gpa’s of your school. (not counting athletes).

tambone: thats not true… it depends largely on what major you apply for. A girl in my class applied for aerospace engineering (or something like that, engineering) at UCLA and didn’t get in. She had a 13 something SAT and was one of teh top 5 gpa’s in the class (out of 300)…
another girl was accepted at UCLA with a 960 SAT and probably barely cracked the top 25% in the class (english major)

I would recommend for original poster’s friend to consider anys college in the country. If he would like to go to an Ivy, he has a reasonable chance at any of them. I would not recommend going to a UC, he would be superior to 90% of the student body at any UC campus (even LA and CAL) if he really is as smart as his stats suggest.
BTW, 200 service hours? what the hell does that mean? I never saw on a college app a place to write down the sum total time you have spent working for no money. Colleges will like to see if he has been a leader of organizations, shown initiative and been creative. Doing the routine stuff like volunteering to stack papers at the senior center or clean cages at the zoo is a valuable life experience, but colleges would much rather see you become editor of your newspaper, begin your own charity, design your own service project, or do something that relates heavily to teh field that you want to go in to.

yes hes ranked 3 / 350

wth … i didnt know u can get accepted to UCLA with 960 SAT … thats like blind-folding your eyes and taking it … writing your name alond is 200 points …

yep…
I tell you, if you look at my posts pre-march, I was all gung-ho defending the UCs… but now, seeing how ass-backwards their admissions is, and and how poor the student body they attract is (well, at least from my high school, compared to what you would expect at a private school comparable in prestige)… I can no longer support them.

LOL more than 100 hours is a lot?

Try competing with my school where the average is about 500+ hours.

I think your freind can get in to all the UC’s if he’s ranked 3rd with the rigorous curriculum that includes the AP classes you mentioned. Is the 4.3 wgpa, his UC gpa? It is a little too low compared to his rank.
My sister (junior) is probably top 5% (150 students), her UC gpa is over 4.5.

If it makes you all feel better, i have no clue what my UC gpa is, i am not even sure of my overall GPA, but it’s somewhere around 3.9, i got into Berkely and Northwestern.
