<p>ha - you know what is funny? I though either the higher or lower would be interested, but they are not. so we are stuck in the midle.</p>
<p>TKsmom, how are things going for your son in his college hunt? My son is a lot like yours statistically, and also is set on engineering. He has a 28 ACT (30 Math) and a 3.5 UW GPA, with 4 APs and science honors classes. His class rank is top 22%. His weighted GPA is a bit higher- around a 3.7- he has good extra-curriculars that show his dedication to engineering, and his teachers love his work ethic. He has applied to a lot of the schools mentioned – UIUC, Purdue, Rose Hulman, Bradley, Wisconsin. He has also applied to Iowa State, a school we visited and loved, which seems to do a terrific job getting their students internships and jobs, but doesn’t have the reputation of some of the other schools he applied to. And he applied to Case Western. So far, he has been accepted to Iowa State and Bradley for engineering. He has also been accepted to UIUC, but not to engineering, to the Division of General Studies, so he would have to work hard and try to transfer into engineering after freshman year. He has been deferred at Purdue for engineering and at Rose Hulman as well. They both want 7th semester grades, and we think it is because of a “C” he got in pre-calc last year (very bad teacher). He hasn’t heard from Wisconsin yet, and was outright denied by Case Western. He is taking three APs this year (Calc, Physics and Computer Science) and his grades are solid high Bs so he is hopeful about Purdue and Rose Hulman. Bottom line, I feel pretty good about his options, but it has been a harder road to toll than if he had slam dunk high grades and stellar test scores. I would at least look into Iowa State, a beautiful school and not hard to get into at all.</p>

<p>Great EC’s showing leadership/communitry service in theatre, music, art and student government. Leads in shows, director of a co-ed acappella group. National Hispanic Scholar–not sure of the significance since we are white, college educated and from a relatively affluent area. </p>
<p>Assume she had good recommendation letters. Her Guidance Counselor and English teacher really love her and were thrilled when she got in.</p>
<p>She wrote excellent common app and supplemental essays.</p>
<p>Did selective summer pre-college programs in art and music. Last summer’s was at NYU. Other classes in art from Pratt and FIT.</p>
<p>To me, NYU took a holistic approach to her application and must have liked her portfolio. </p>
<p>They overlooked her 2 weak final grades (a 78 in algebra 2/ trig and a 73 in chem.) They probably took note of the fact than she had a mid-80’s grade in honors bio (decent) and a 650 on the bio SAT2. Also completed 6 college credits in anatomy and physiology (although she never took physics.) She also did not take pre-calculus junior year. However, she is taking college algebra this year.</p>

I’ve been accepted to DePaul University($52,000), Kalamazoo College($68,000), and Centre College (I’m not sure yet).
Postponed at UW-Madison (I’m 99% positive I’m getting in. I sent basically nothing in with it.)

<p>Question about Naviance and the college match–how accurate were they for you? We’ve just started looking at these and according to the college match, there isn’t a single match out there for our DS :). The colleges that he is interested in show matches of 15% and not because his grades are too low but because they are too high or they say they don’t have his intended major but we know they do as he has talked personally to the department chairs. I love the features of the search and we try to put in as much information as possible but the best hit he seems to get is about 52% and when we research those, they don’t have his intended major for sure and maybe something else he wants. Is there a trick to doing this?</p>
<p>He is looking at schools that give great merit aid, with the exception of his number one choice. 3.7 uw (no weighting at our school) top 11%, all honors/AP, PSAT protected SAT around 2200, practice ACT’s 32-34. Most of the schools he is considering have mid-range ACT 22-26 +/- 2 with mid range GPA’s in the 3.3-3.5 range.</p>
<p>He doesn’t have his official test scores in so the scattergrams are not helping yet.</p>

<p>Are you only looking at the scattergrams or are you looking into the “School Stats?” I think the stats figures are more helpful, including such info as avg SAT accepted, lowest SAT accepted…and so on.</p>
<p>We were running the match tool, same one as on this site (Supermatch here). He has looked at the data for the schools he has considered and he is easily in the top 25% for all but his #1 choice. There is a box you can check that says something like “want high merit aid chances” or something like that that I thought would help but maybe adds a percentage or two.</p>
<p>His #2 choice is a perfect fit for him from what we see. He would be top 25%, they have a very good program in his major, they have the EC’s he wants, size school is right, etc. It gives us a 17% match (saying it doesn’t have his major). </p>
<p>We are trying to find other schools that would be like this one that might be even better fits and have more merit aid that would give him closer to a full ride. The above school we are looking at having $12K leftover unless he happened to get one of the 6 full rides.</p>
