<p>My older kids with worse stats got into most of above. One interesting thing that came out of the process is the sincere enthusiasm some of these schools have to get strong California kids and how committed they are to invest further in their universities. Plus, most will be substantially more affordable than going to a UC in state.</p>
<p>My S… 3.5 GPA W…UW ?.. 2190 SAT’s, top private prep with no ranking. Pretty rigorous class load, only 3 years of FL though. Eagle Scout, 1500 community service hrs, tons of leadership, I am pretty sure great LOR’s because his teachers have always raved about him, average essays.</p>

<p>From our Naviance looked like he should of gotten in easily at L&C, Whitman, Bates and Colby… I think it is just an insane year with SO many applicants… they had to cut somewhere and I am sure his low GPA topped with a less than steller grades first semester Senior put the nail in the coffin.</p>
<p>I have about a 3.6-3.65 GPA unweighted on a standard scale if you take out classes like speech, music, etc. (However, my school doesn’t do UW GPAs, so it’s an estimate) I’ve so far gotten into Vanderbilt and Wellesley.</p>
<p>Well, after lurking here for months, this is my first post!
My son goes to a selective (but not tippity top) private school in Los Angeles.
GPA 3.6 (W); no ranking. 2100 SATs
Only one AP last year, three this year. A few other honors classes in 9th/10th.
Excellent ECs throughout all showing a consistent interest in filmmaking.
Took a college UCLA class in filmmaking last summer (not a HS program, a college course in experimental film. He had to petition the teacher to be accepted.)
Also, a great internship in the digital department of a late night TV show last summer
co-editor of the school satirical magazine.
Wrote a stunning essay (imho) on our relocation from NYC to LA the summer before 9th grade.
Outstanding recs, including from the UCLA professor for the summer program and someone from his internship. </p>

Still haven’t heard from U of Michigan but after being deferred in December he lost interest, so I’m assuming it will be a No. We’ve done no follow up. </p>
<p>He’s narrowed to Emerson, Skidmore and Hamilton. I would love to revisit Skidmore and Hamilton…but it’s such a long trip and I’m not sure we can swing it (he visited both places twice last year. My Dad went to Hamilton). </p>
<p>He’s a great, easy-going, super personable kid and although he was disappointed by the January admit for Hamilton is seriously considering doing 1st semester at their London program and then heading to Clinton in January.
I have mixed feelings. Can’t decide if it would really stink to miss the first term or if he would find it exciting and different - probably some combination of both. Hamilton has given us tons of information to help make a decision and put us in touch with other January admits who have done the London option.
If anyone has any thoughts…I’d be happy to hear them. </p>
<p>I will say, that after all the sleepless nights and worry (particularly about his GPA), he is thrilled with his choices and I’m thrilled he’s got them!</p>
<p>My son got in everywhere he applied! Could not believe it! He was accepted at Colorado school of Mines, CSU Ft. Collins, Purdue, Clarkson with merit scholarship, and lastly Cornell (CALS)! He ended up not applying to Lehigh or Lafayette which also would have been good fits. His essay was amazing and because he is not like most boys, I think that really helped him to stand out. Now he has some deciding to do. Never expected to have all of these options.</p>
<p>I’m a senior, and I got into Carnegie Mellon and Wake Forest a few days ago with a 3.2 UW GPA and 1540/2290 SAT. No hooks. Waitlisted at Vanderbilt and UNC-Chapel Hill and waiting on Cornell, Duke, UC Berkeley, Georgetown, NYU, Michigan. </p>
<p>I honestly thought I was going to end up at my safety after getting rejected/waitlisted from 6 schools in a row (WashU, UCLA, UVA, Boston College, UNC, Vanderbilt) but my CMU and Wake acceptances really boosted my confidence. I worked really hard on my essays back in the fall and I’m pretty sure they really helped me get into those 2 schools and got me considered as a competitive applicant for UNC and Vandy.</p>
<p>My son is at RPI not sure where you live but its not extremely cold Snow has not been bad at all this year-Stay away from Rochester, Buffalo NY if you don’t want snow</p>
<p>My son will graduate with a 3.4; ACT=29. He got into all of his schools:</p>
<p>LMU, Loyola Chicago, U of Oregon, WA State U, Syracuse, U of Portland. These aren’t Stanford et. al., but solid schools for the next 4 yrs. Let me remind everyone, having already seen 2 kids thru college, including myself and husband: IT isn’t where you go to college that determines your future success; It’s what YOU do when you get there and what YOU take advantage of while your there.</p>

<p>Stmsu, having had one graduate already from WSU, while passing up more prestigious options I have to agree with you totally. While the level of partying is a bit much for a parent, the camaraderie and spirit kids gained there is unlike anywhere. Far more than some of us who went to “prestigious” universities, they will be Cougars first when they are 85.</p>

<p>Applied & accepted EA to Lake Forest College & Lawrence U. (test optional) & Willamette. Received merit aid from all; most from LFC since it included music merit. Total package from LFC & LU was comparable.</p>
<p>Also accepted to Chico State & Sonoma State (rolling).</p>
<p>Did not apply to any UCs b/c I figured the most they would offer would be student loans, so unaffordable for this family. She was interested in UCSC, but I did not want to tell her she had to drop out or transfer to a CSU after sophomore year due to financial reasons.</p>
<p>Student attends inner city public HS; not in the highest track. Student Body President; probably one of her recs said she is the best one ever.</p>
<p>My S boarderline qualifies for this thread but I’ll post in case it helps. He had a 3.62 GPA when he applied but with 12 AP’s, his weighted was a 4.99. He was in the top 2% of his mediocre public school. Had a 33 ACT and good EC’s and Recs.</p>
