Where did your 3.3-3.6 GPA child get in?

My DS (3.36 GPA) finally heard from RIT. Unfortunately he got admitted to his 3rd choice major so he won’t be going there since he has been admitted to his 1st choice major at other schools.

I’ve been following this thread for a while so now that all my son’s decisions are in I thought I’d post his results. He is going for ChemE. His uw gpa is ~3.5, but he did have very good test scores. Accepted to RPI, Case Western, UMass Amherst Honors, Clarkson, and Michigan Tech. Waitlisted at Bucknell which is essentially a rejection. So he (or maybe that is me!) is excited to move on to the decision phase.

Congrats to all! Hope that everyone returns to report final college choices.

I wonder why this thread has so little activity compared to the 3.0-3.3 thread. I appreciate, and learn from, all of the posts recorded here.

DS 3.5 GPA accepted at University of Colorado Boulder. He’s happy.

I think there is less activity here than the 3.0 thread because many here applied to schools with regular decision. The 3.0 thread had many EA and rolling admission.

Next week should be a big week here.

Hi Longhaul–thanks for the reply…but why would a 3.0-3.3 student be more likely to apply ED/ED than a 3.3-3.6 student? (Am trying to educate myself as my HS Jr is my oldest–and I need all the help I can find!)

Are more of the schools that are more likely to accept 3.0 students rolling admission? I guess I would have thought the opposite—that the less competitive applicant would be less likely to apply ED.

There have been nearly 2500 posts since June 2010 in the 3-3.3 thread and only 500 here since Aug 2009. I am just curious and wish there were more in the range of this thread.

CT417, ED (early decision) is different from EA (early action). ED means you apply to one school by an early deadline and commit to attend that school if you are admitted (though you can sometimes back out if financial aid doesn’t work out). With EA, you also apply early but it isn’t binding; you can apply to other colleges. And with rolling admissions, the college considers your application as soon as it is received. Admissions decisions can often be made in a matter of a few weeks. Hope this helps.

Other people, please correct me if I’ve misspoken (or miswritten)!

Thanks smythic–I actually knew all that but my post probably sounded like I didn’t! We could add SCEA into the mix to really confuse everyone although that I don’t think SCEA will be utilized by the 3.3-3.6 applicants.

I am just intrigued by the fact that there have been five times as many posts in the 3-3.3 thread as 3.3-3.6 thread during roughly the same time period. Does it come down to distribution of GPAs or are the 3.0 parents simply prolific posters?

All our decisions are in-- for those looking at this for next year maybe this will give some ideas. DS quick stats 3.4 UW when applied in the fall, up to (barely) 3.50 in January. SAT 1800 (CR + M 1240)

MTSU accepted (his auto admit safety)
U of Evansville-- accepted with Merit $$
Whittier College-- accepted with Merit $$
U of the Pacific-- accepted with small Merit $$
U of Denver-- accepted, no Merit $$
Belmont U-- accepted no Merit $$
U of Redlands-- accepted with Merit $$
Loyola Marymount-- accepted still waiting to hear about $$ on April 1st
George Washington U-- waitlisted

Lots of great options out there-- Although DS will likely not end up at Evansville due to it being so far from home and inconvienient to travel to (for us)I have to say that it is a great option for someone in this grade range looking for a small school-- plus it has engineering and business which is unusual for that size school. They have been so nice and helpful and the visit was wonderful–plus it is less expensive than many other of the other choices

I am another parent with a child “on the cusp” between the ranges on these two threads. I lurk here and post there. I found the other thread to be more active and informative in the areas where I most needed it, primarily in the areas of fit and strategy.

As to the EA/ED applications, I know that for DS and his stats there were advantages for early applications, both for merit and admission purposes. Strategic advantages included more thorough holistic reviews including closer reading of essays (more than one adcom shared this with us), which I believe is more important for students in the lower stat range.

The lower GPA range, especially with higher test scores like my S, means more emphasis on “threading the needle” for safeties and matches, and when combined with a need for merit at the LACs which so frequently appeared to offer a better fit, comparing notes became much more important.

Last, many times students in the 3.0-3.3 range are late bloomers, have specific learning style issues, or otherwise need a bit more TLC to find their right place. Sometimes this is as simple as an unusual major (musical theatre, for example) or dual major interest, but then when factoring in climate preferences, social and political vibes, distance and travel issues…well, the discussions were that much more lively.

I personally found many posters on the other thread to be active in visiting campuses as well as generous in sharing perspectives. Not sure why I spent so much more time there, except that time was limited and I subscribed early there instead of here once I posted.
