Where did your 3.3-3.6 GPA child get in?

All are results are in:
White Male from PA
3.6 UW/4.06 W thru 11th grade –
HS could not tell us what was sent for mid-yr. HS is tri-mester and it is thought a hybrid number was sent for mid-yr.
34 ACT; 1480 SAT 1 sitting out of 1600 / 2140 superscore SAT all 3 sections
National Merit Finalist
ECs - solid; varied; and the 2 most time consuming he has been doing since before 9th grade.

Accepted w/ merit (average merit was $20k/year):
Pitzer - Trustee Scholarship
Rhodes
Trinity University (San Antonio)
University of Tulsa
Juniata
Susquehanna
Alabama
Alabama Huntsville

Waitlisted - Haverford

Denied:
Colorado College - after EA redirect to Regular decision
Pomona
Occidental

We were very surprised by the Oxy rejection and the Pitzer acceptance. We thought it would be reversed.

Some additional anectdotal info (not on my D, who had closer to 3.7, 32 ACT, done after ED), but her close friend, who had about 3.2 GPA and high SATs (2200+): got into CMU, Emory, Lehigh, Tufts–a key for him, I believe was 1) less common major choices, i.e. humanities at CMU, and 2) very hard course load from a very competitive high school. However, even GCs were surprised by his good results, so you never know. Frankly, I think some schools just want to see “smart kids” attend, which can boil down to simply high SAT math scores. That was somewhat of a constant for successful kids at Ds school, for what it is worth.

All the decisions are in for me! 3.4 UW GPA, 31 ACT

Accepted: Evergreen ($4000 merit), CUNY Brooklyn (Macaulay Honors College), CUNY Hunter, CCNY, Sarah Lawrence, Fordham, Eugene Lang
Waitlisted: UChicago, NYU

I’m still waiting to hear from financial aid for a couple places, but I’m pretty sure I know where I’m going, and I’m totally stoked.

Dowzerw-Congrats to your son…my son is a junior and was also interested in v tech and north Carolina state and university of maryland-college park.He is interested in engineering or computer science. His stats are about the same right now as your son. Do you mind me asking how much the scholarship was for. I heard those schools don’t give very much. Which school is he leaning towards? So far we have visited Virginia tech. I also heard those schools are getting harder to get into so I was nervous he would not be able to get in…any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

hey jerseymomz-happy to help out. I dont like posting the financial info on the forum so I will message it to you. He is def leaning towards VTech. It is farthest away so wish he wasnt headed there but he really loved the feel of the campus, the access to the out of doors, the reputation of the food availability, oh and the reputation of the engineering school. He was also very impressed with their engineering school presentation because it was very organized and informative and he saw many cool tools and instruments they have available for their students to learn by. We had him apply to a lot of schools because with him being just a solidly good student but not a rocket scientist star, we didnt know what to expect. He was turned down at UVA and UNC-CH but got in everywhere else (8 schools) so all in all, was successful. One thing he has going for him is that while he is a solid B+/A- student (more B+), he doesn’t have any stumbles in there. His performance has been absolutely consistent. He has an older sister who had some very strong grades…and tanked a couple of classes (we didn’t learn until she was a senior in HS that she had anxiety and learning disabilities) so her college acceptances were likewise reflective-erratic.

Dowzerw-Thanks so much for that info…my son has all A and B’s but 2 C’s in Spanish and ugh one in honors trig. He has taken a lot of honors and AP courses mostly in math, science and history. Do you think those C’s will be enough to make him not as strong as your son? I am so impressed by all the schools he got accepted into and that he got merit money. My son is interested in so many of those schools, and I didn’t think we would get anything! It just seems likes its getting harder to get in, and more expensive! Thanks again for your info and will wait for the message from you…

Returned from being gone for Spring Break for a week and picked up the mail. Finally received the final two admissions decisions DS had been waiting for.

HS - Top 25 ranked public HS in Ohio
GPA: 3.6 UW / 3.8 W - almost all Honors, APs (Calc (5), Physics (4), English Lit, Stats) - school doesn’t weight much
Rank: Top 20%
ACT: 33
SAT: 2130
SAT II: Math II - 750, Physics - 690

Two very focused ECs: 1) wrestling which he has been doing since 1st grade. Team Captain, 2X All-Conf. Trains and wrestles almost year round. Recruited at DIII level. 2) Religious/Service Activities - mission trips to Ecuador and S. Carolina and participation in Fellowship of Christian athletes.

Planned Major: Civil Engineering

Final Results:

Accepted:

Lehigh (Engineering)
Lafayette (Engineering, Merit $)
Ohio State (Engineering, Merit $$)
U. of Illinois (Engineering, Honors Program)
Villanova (Engineering)
Wheaton (Engineering, Merit $$)

Wait List:

Bucknell
Case Western

Rejected:

Cornell
Northwestern
Vanderbilt

Results were actually pretty predictable based on DS’s stats and background. Very strong test scores, decent grades with strong upward trend, rigorous curriculum, well rounded with focused ECs, thought his essays were well written and presented who he is well. Class Rank was probably a non-starter for the HMFR schools where he was rejected. I know he could have done the work at any of them and thrived but they definitely look for the stats first. Wait List at Bucknell was a bit of a surprise given he was accepted at Lehigh and Lafayette. Wait List at CW not a surprise - never visited although we live only 40 minutes away. Only applied last minute because it was free and didn’t require additional essays.

After all the work and waiting, he is fortunate to have several great options which was the goal from the start. Looks like it will come down to Lehigh vs Lafayette as he felt very comfortable when we visited at both. Headed back to both for Admitted Students visits in the next week and half and then will make final decision.

Good luck to all still deciding.

Matmaven, did he get a Marquis Scholarship? (You can pm me if you want - myself, my husband and my son all went to Lafayette. Son graduated 2011. None of us were engineers but S’s roommate and best friend is a Chem E.)

Hello! Bumping this thread up with my results.

GPA: 3.4 UW/3.7 UW
HS: Competitive Public I guess???
Rank: Top 20%
Ethnicity: White/Jewish
SAT: 2110 - 720 CR, 670 M, 720 W
SAT II: 620 USH, 640 LIT, 710 MATH 1

Have to say my GPA is only a 3.4 because I’ve been to summer school twice to raise my grade in Algebra II and English 10, so my GPA, counting those grades, is really a 3.3, but I’m going with what was printed on my transcript.

Lots of fantastic EC’s, not to brag, I performed at the Kennedy’s Center Cappies Gala when our theater department got nominated for “Best Musical”, been in plays in school and out of school, interned at a music school, played piano since I was 4 and I’ve won awards, and been in the top high school choir in the state and made my district choir all 4 years, you know the drill.

My essay’s were really good, but I made them serious and not funny and I felt that they might’ve been pretentious but I don’t really know. Also, my teacher said they seemed like they were written by someone older but unless my parents hacked on to my CommonApp, I don’t know how that would’ve been possible, lol.

My rec’s were from my AP Art History and AP Physics C teacher, but I didn’t get to read them. I suppose they were alright?

I’ve taken a lot of AP classes.

Major: Art History, also put Physics as my 2nd Choice

Congrats on your wonderful admits. Do you know what you plan to study?

I am not a parent but have a 3.9 GPa and 24 on act what schools in nc would be considerable…specifically for merit scholarships?

TiaraM-are you in state in NC? Is your GPA 3.9? This thread is for 3.3-3.6s but will certainly make some suggestions but need to know a little more about you. Do you have any “hooks”-meaning are you a legacy to any colleges in NC? are you a first generation in your family to go to college? are you a URM-underrepresented minority? What are you interested in?

I am a minority. Not the first to go to college. I want to major in accounting.

I am also in the top 10% of my class

are you in state in NC?

Yes I live in nc

You should have a lot of good opportunities then. How about NC State? UNCW? ECU? Every school gives some using one standard or another. They look at your value to them-some need to fill gaps of say women engineers or under represented ethnic groups, etc. Lots of good schools in NC and whether any will give good merit aid is a bit of a crap shoot. NC A&T? Gardiner-Webb?
