My son is a junior and plays football but has not expressed an interest in playing at the college level. We have recently received letters from 3 schools asking him to submit informaton (film and academic performance). The letters were sent to him at his high school, with his name spelled incorrectly. My question is …where did they get his name from?

Now that he’s received these letters he is somewhat interested. Is it worth pursuing? We do not have any film from his junionr year, but his coach probably does. Do you generally pay the coach to put together a dvd?

Thank you8!

I would think your coach would help as part of his job responsibilities…Looks good for him, too, and he gets bragging rights…

Do the coaches intially send out a “mass mailing” to people on these sites? I’m just curious as to how the process works if you don’t initiate it. My son is good, but I don’t think he would be on any “top” list.

i thought you meant what clearing house or source football recruiters use other than talking directly with players and coaches. Unlike most sports football has a great deal of recruiting structure and visibility online, here’s the other source colleges use: [Scout.com - College and High School Football, Basketball, Recruiting, NFL, and MLB Front Page](<a href=“College Sports News and Recruiting”>http://www.scout.com/)

and as far as I know all high school football coaches are actively entering player data into www.maxpreps.com

any decent high school football player who’s in the recruiting pipeline for next year is currently profiled in scout and maxpreps

Thank you for the information. I looked in MaxPreps and you are right my son was there.

Mainstone~You and your son should consider if he really does want to play football in college before you begin this process. Has he considered what kind of school he hopes to attend, Ivy, small LAC’s , large state school? Also, consult his coach and ask him to tell you honestly at what level he thinks your son could succeed. You will definitely need to gather up his game films from the coach and have a highlight film made. Unless you can do this yourself it will cost a fair amount to have one made.
If you want to pursue the recruiting process , start looking at schools in the division that your son is targeting, fill out their prospective athlete forms , get his test scores and a transcript ready and look to see when they have camps and prospect days.

I too wondered the same thing so I asked our coach. He said around the January timeframe, there is an organization in Alabama, that is a clearinghouse for Football athletes. There are set questions that the coach answers, like position size weight etc. Our coach was not up to date with grades or scores so I dont know if that is part of the questionaire. Our coach said that he thought this was the process at most schools. My son got lots of letters, and he was excited by them, but just know at Colby College the coach said they sent out about 1200 letters, to narrow it down to about 120 recruits, to then get players. The NESCAC’s get about 14 picks for admissions.

jerseygirl & misswan thank you for your information. It is very helpful. It looks like the letters he received were part of a larger mailing. I’ll talk to my son and his coach and see if we want to move forward with football. Frankly I find the whole college process stressful enough without out adding another branch of “recruiting” to it :), on the other hand if it opens some doors it may be worth it.

main, if your boy signs in November, you’ll find the college process stress replaced with envy from the students and parents waiting until April 1st for the envelope! good luck!
