Where do I go from here?

Current School: Sophomore at UW-Seattle. Not a great fit. I can stay but I’d rather not. I don’t want to waste 4years at a place where I’m not happy. Taking a quarter off to get some work experience and I think I found my true calling.

Intended Major: Civil Engineering or Materials Science Engineering

GPA: Fall Quarter: 3.65 l Winter Quarter: 3.64 l Spring Quarter: 2.95 l Average GPA: 3.39
Made dean’s list winter quarter. Invited to three national collegiate societies. Joined none because of steep registration fee and low pay-off.
Also, I kind of gave up Spring Quarter because I didn’t know what major I want to do and I felt like I was wasting a lot of time and money. In hindsight, I wish I had pulled through and done better. If only foresight were 20/20.

Work Experience: Assistant On-Site supervisor, translator at a construction site. Working a for a subcontractor. In line with intended major.
On-campus job as an Event Assistant. Not related to major but pays well, a lot of communication and leadership required.
Translator for a National TV channel. Short summer stint.

Volunteer: Residence Hall Student Council
Operation Smile Club, an environmental club, translator for a charity group

(Possible attractive qualities: First generation college student, minority, knows 3 languages(?))

Reasons for transfer: current school not a fit/ admission to major at current school is competitive/ wasn’t able to register twice for needed classes because of brutal registration process.

What schools do you think I’d have a realistic chance of getting into, granted I write a really good personal statement? (Preferably on the east coast, but not necessarily) Any advice or suggestion is highly appreciated!

Hard to tell exactly why you want to transfer or what you’re looking for. Do you want another big school? (Plenty out there with solid civil engineering - UCIC, Purdue, Penn State, UW-Madison, etc.) Or do you want a smaller, more focused, technical school? Maybe WPI … RPI … Stevens Institute of Technology? You said East Coast - but north or south? Northeastern? Tulane, perhaps? Your GPA is okay - sounds like your school has quarters. Do you plan to go back for another quarter (or two) or simply keep working and apply to transfer in as a sophomore? Lots of schools look for a 3.5 - if you could log another quarter or two and bump up over that threshold might help. Good luck.

Thanks! Sorry for the late reply. I thought no one was going to comment on this thread. Cost is not a factor. I’m just looking for a smaller school that is more focused on engineering. Or any school(large or small) that has a smaller student to faculty ratio.

By east coast, I mean the north east more specifically, but anywhere that I have a shot at is fine!
