Where do med schools get their funding, other than tuition?
Fed grants?
state grants?
where else?

Most medical schools have a three missions–education, research, and clinical–with separate funding sources for each. If the school is state-sponsored, they receive state funding in addition to tuition to fund the education mission. Research is funded by grants, both federal/state and private industry. The clinical mission is funded by patient care revenue from billing insurance companies or contracts with hospitals. The schools also have endowments that fund education and research activities. Hope this answers your question.
AMSA has a very good FAQ about this topic

Son’s b-school likes to say they subsidize the med school! Especially all the OOS b students paying hefty, hefty tuition. Well discussed (polite word) topic on campus.

What sources do medical schools derive their revenue from?
Medical schools have several sources that contribute to their overall revenue stream. For example, below is a table and chart illustrating the breakdown of medical school revenues in 2001-2002.(6)
Revenue Source 2001-2002 Percentage (All Schools)
Practice Plans 36.0
Hospitals/Medical School Programs 12.5
Federal Appropriations 0.3
State and Local Government Appropriations 7.1
Parent University Support 0.6
Tuition and Fees 3.3 <<<<<============== wow! 3.3% Is that all? yikes!
Endowment 2.1
Gifts 2.4
Miscellaneous Sources 4.1
Total Grants and Contracts 31.7
Total Revenues 100.0
Exact numbers are hard to come by because there are several different methodologies and competing schools of thought about what exactly these costs involve, but the general number I’ve seen tossed around is that it cost around $100-110K/year in direct costs to educate a single med student.
The direct costs of educating a single medical resident is $154K/year, according to the AAMC.
