I see that Mudd has a lower 6 year graduation rate than some of the other top liberal arts colleges. It has been about 85%. Where do the 15% go after Mudd? I am assuming they transfer to other colleges or universitites

Most that decide to go back to college seem to just attend the local state university.

Of course the transfer rate is higher than other LACS - we’re an engineering school. If you look at the numbers for people who change departments at at university, you’d almost be surprised that we retain as many people as we do(admittedly its a lot harder to transfer out of Mudd than to switch schools in a university…).

Anyway, the 3 people I know who have transferred out of the class of 2012 so far are going to attend Columbia, Tufts, and OSU in the fall. I think the longer you stay in Mudd, the harder it gets to transfer out (due to the lack of grade inflation), but that’s just my speculation.

Why don’t they do an off campus major at one of the other 5-C colleges instead?

The primary reason is because even if you do an off-campus major, you are still required to take the technical core, hum/soc requirements, and have a minor in a technical subject at HMC. So it’s not like you will completely escape the things that make HMC difficult, in fact it may be even more difficult depending on who you are.

Also though, some people just don’t fit in at the Mudd campus and Claremont community. HMC is incredibly small and has a unique culture, and while the other colleges add a little bit, it is still relatively small. Furthermore, Claremont is a quiet town where everything closes at 8 PM - not exactly a collegetown if you know what I mean. Some people may like this but others just don’t fit in here.
