I’ve just been accepted early decision to Lafayette College. It’s exciting; the letter was very personal and welcoming. However, the night before getting the letter I found a statistic on their website that’s been bothering me a lot. 65% of their students don’t go to graduate school, but instead immediately seek full-time employment. Only 16% went on to grad school, 6% to law school, and 2% to med school. http://ww2.lafayette.edu/~careers/grad_stats_04.php

Does anyone know why so few students continue studying after college (especially when considering the quality of the school’s academics and reputation)?

Thanks,
Kyle

I’m applying to Lafayette and the same types of schools. Most schools I have looked at I have seen relatively the same type of statistic.

that’s actually reassuring, and it turns out that bucknell and lehigh are almost exactly the same as laf.

what other schools are you applying to?

Whole list is:
Bucknell, Syracuse, Lafayette, U of Delaware, Union College (NY), Villanova, Fairfield, Columbia, Rowan, U of Notre Dame, Valapariso, and Rensselaer Polytech Institue.

Please post stats.

Thanks

congrats on your acceptance! DS is applying to Lafayette RD

Spikemom, thank you very much, and best of luck to DS.

Smiles, i should probably make a bit of a disclaimer that my stats probably wont be too informative. coming from a highly competitive public high school, my gpa (listed below) is seemingly low. My school doesnt weight it either; it does, however, provide Quality Point Averages (don’t worry about it if you’ve never heard of it). The good thing about Lafayette, at least this is the impression my interviewer gave me, is that admissions are very aware of how a gpa is in context to the highscool; and if that gpa isnt too strong, as mine most certainly is weak (even from my high school), then it can be compensated for with extracurriculars/good college essay/etc.

GPA (see above): 3.02
QPA: 14.8
SAT M: 680
SAT W: 710
SAT R: 630
SAT II: US History: 710; Lit: 560
APs: US History: 4; I plan on taking the Psychology, US Gov’t and Politics, and Music Theory (possibly Comparative Gov’t and Politics as well)

extra curriculars:
-Debate Team Captain (numerous awards won)
-Classical Piano (numerous awards won; have been playing for a very long time)
-Hospital summer volunteer (leadership board; some 180 hours served throughout high school career)
-Democrats Club
-Junior Statesmen of America (a political activism club)
-Arabic Language program taught through Yale University, which is nearby (unfortunately, Lafayette does not teach Arabic; though i’ve been told that students take such a class through UPENN at some time)
-a large number of smaller activities; the ones mentioned took up a lot of my time, though.

thanks hereticalsaint and good luck

I think you have to consider that about 30% of the students are in engineering where you would expect graduates to work for a few years before going for a grad degree. Business is a popular major at Laf and most competitive business schools want their applicants to have several years of working experience before they apply to their MBA programs. A much better indicator would be the percentage of students that go on for advanced degrees within 5 years of graduation.
