S2 is trying to complete his Stafford MPN on studentloans.gov, and he has gone through the entire form twice. NOWHERE is there a place for him to enter the amount he wants to borrow! He is only taking out the $3500 subsidized this year and wants to be sure he doesn’t get the $5500.

Is there something obvious we are missing here?

The MPN is good for the Stafford loans he will borrow for his entire college career so does not show the amount for this year alone. The school is the place where you have to accept the amount you want for the current year.

swimcatsmom,
Thanks! Finally got S2 calmed down enough to actually submit the form. He was not happy about not having a document that has an actual $$ amount.

Just remind him the M in MPN stands for Master (Promissory Note). It is a one off thing - after this year he will not do another one (though I think I am supposed to do another one because the school changed to direct loans). Yhe only way he gets to choose a $ number for the loan is by telling the school the amount he wants to accept.

Tell him he will get a notice of disbursement by mail from Direct Loans. That will have numbers, rates, etc. on it. Good for him for being savvy enough to want everything in writing!
