Where do you find upholstery fabric?

My mother wants to recover an old chair. I have taken her to Joanne’s and gone though all the books at the reupholstery shop, nothing is ‘popping’. Where else does someone in a small town find the fabric options? Are there good online sites?

You might take a look at Calico Corners

I also like Calico Corners very much. They did all of our drapery. I also bought quite a bit of their fabric and covered two sofas. They have a large selection of quality material and often have some great sales. I’ve never used them online, however. I live on the East Coast and there are a lot of Calico Corner stores here. We also have a store called Fabricland which is very good. When I lived on the West Coast, I used to go to New York Fabrics in the East Bay and in Marin County. Hope this helps, have fun with your project.

I have recoverd some things and done other sewing with upholstery fabrics…we have at least two stores that sell upholstery fabrics locally. Depending on where you live, you may have to go to a larger city, but you should be able to “google” upholstery fabrics in ______________(city). There are also several on-line sites, but I think that is hard to do…I like to feel and see it in person.

You can find upholstery-weight fabric online. Start by googling “upholstery fabric” and narrow your search by using a brand name “Pierre Deux” or “Waverly fabric” (Waverly makes a lot of nice upholstery fabrics) or descriptors like “French provencal fabric” or “English chintz” or “checked fabric.” I’ve had good luck with eBay.

Also check Country Curtains, Plow & Hearth, & Pottery Barn - they sell fabric by the yard too.

Calico Corners is a great place. G Street Fabric (DC area) also has a great online store.

PS If you check on eBay, make sure you look at the fabric width & number of yards. Often the eBay sellers will list large pieces of fabric, rather than fabric from the bolt.

If you do go the online route, many of them will sell you a swatch for $2 or so…so that you can see it in person before you buy a big piece of it. But if you can find a store in your area, they carry bolts and bolt of it, plus trims, etc. and usually at a better price than online, I have found.

Furniture stores that sell custom-made pieces (and have those big books of sample swatches) will also sell that fabric by the yard, but it can be pricey. Looking at pieces already made up is a good way to “shop” the fabric, though.

best ever…and no, I don’t work for them…

I have had lots of success at Joanne’s. But I also love Calico Corners and have driven the two hours necessary to have their selection (and excellent sales consultants in some cases, as well).

I have also driven an hour or two to larger suppliers - discount in this case - when neither of these panned out. Look around to see if there is similar in your area. EG, [Upholstery Fabric Outlet](http://ufofabrics.com/).

LOVE the Upholstery Fabrics in Houston. They appear to be part of a chain with an online store. You could always order a bunch of samples and then order what you like…
