Where do you go for decent NEWS??

Sometimes there is a tradeoff between accuracy and expediency. Fact-checking information takes time, so I think it takes sheer luck for a news agency to be the first to report and, at the same time, report completely accurately.

Last night, my friends and I at Harvard tended to go directly to the police scanner because, living only 3 miles from where Suspect #2 was found in a boat, we thought it would be prudent to have rapid access to information.

Decent news requires a decent press. And given what we get to hear, read, or watch, that seems totally impossible. The coverage of the Boston events has been the usual horrible to full of bad information. CNN and NBC are particularly poor. They just parade their bumbling divas in front of the camera and let them babble like jays.

When the media embraces a garbage outfit like the HuffPo as one of their own, you know that media and decency should not be used in the same sentence.

Right, there were no inaccuracies on the internet on this story.

IbnAbihi, you’re 100% right about the tradeoff between speed and accuracy, but there was one exception in the wee hours of Friday morning. The Boston Globe stood out as the first outlet to say definitively that the MIT suspects were in fact the Marathon suspects. They were alone for more than an hour in that, which in this kind of fast-breaking story, must be a pretty scary place to be. My guess is that, being the big local newspaper, they had contacts inside local law enforcement that they worked.

FlyMe, I get it from the BBC webpage, yes.

For up-to-the-minute news, I go to the BBC, which is invariably the news source with the most up-to-date info, I find. If I want some more in depth analysis a few hours later, then I tend to go to The Guardian.

Morning Joe!

Breaking news I usually get first on internet, I’ll sometimes follow-up with a google news search for more info on a news event. Evenings or early morning when I have quiet time I’ll usually watch some podcasts of news of the day from TV news outlets, both US and International, via Roku setup.

The onion.

What’s wrong with CNN? As you can see, the problem is reddit:

[Should criminal investigations be crowdsourced? - CNN.com](http://edition.cnn.com/2013/04/22/tech/web/boston-suspects-reddit-sleuthing/index.html?hpt=hp_c2)

I refuse to watch any mainstream media television stations any more. They leave a lot of things out that are important for the public to know. As far as I am concerned, they are all too biased.
I read different bloggers and conservative websites.

CNN or CBS!

stay away from fox, the only thing that comes out of their mouths in nonsense, not news

I listen to CNBC for business TV news. Investors Business Daily for print business news. I start with Google News for online news. The NYT is horribly biased and I am not talking only about its opinion section. I quite my subscription long ago. I watch Fox News for more objective commentary. CNN is best on Sunday mornings. I no longer watch MSNBC because it is now hate speech. I used to watch Current TV to see Spitzer until Gore sold the network to the favorite network of terrorists. BBC radio is excellent. NPR is biased and boring. How anyone can listen to NPR is beyond me.

BBC world on computer and put on my tv. They have a bias but I understand it. Aljazeera since a student of mine is now a major news personality with them. I watch local news for weather. I watch some CNN programming. The ads are awful!!! And some Internet news and here, with CC!

Most peoples’ notion of “decent” news is coverage that is slanted the same way they already lean themselves.

BBC News or ABC News for me. I avoid CNN and Fox like the plague.

razor, you’d actually be surprised at the quality of some of Al Jazeera’s reporting. It seems they’re trying to be more like the BBC than American cable news networks.

I actually like watching NHK’s news because they often have really nice human interest stories. Especially after the tsunami (and the still ongoing cleanup). Also, some of those anchors are just trying so hard to get their English right you have to like them.

I live on the west coast, which makes watching ABC, NBC and CBS ridiculous. I do watch the first 15 minutes of our local CBS affiliate for local/regional news. For national/international news I like Megan Kelly (FOX) and Bret Baier (FOX). For breaking news I tend to watch CNN. For political commentary I like Charles Krauthammer. Print news – local daily paper and the WSJ.

I tend to go with ABC, as I find them restrained in making definitive statements during breaking news stories and I find their analysis balanced.

If Fox is ever on in a waiting room, I want to kill myself. Love this Jon Stewart clip from last night. (wish I could stay up late enough to watch him & Colbert)

I agree with you to some extent. I have watched good balanced reporting regarding some political disputes within the middle east. Although I don’t watch all the time, I have yet to see a balanced report regarding Israel. AJ is owned by country whose major players are all members of the religion of hate and intolerance. I would be surprised if AJ ever actually provided balanced coverage regarding Israel and the atrocities committed by middle eastern groups against Israel.

I don’t know that AJ’s problem is unique. 80% of American journalist are with the party of the takers so their reporting supports the takers. That’s why Foxnews is so important and provides a more balanced view.

I don’t think writing off an entire network because of an admittedly obvious bias towards one subject necessarily makes it a bad network.

Not sure if Fox is actually providing a balanced view or just a different sort of bias.

Also, great clip nj2011mom.

Does anyone else ever watch RT? That’s a news station that puts forward a party line.
