Where do you have the most success with YOUR clothes shopping?

The trick is just to show your legs as if they’re fabulous. A woman in a knee length skirt with no hose will look a lot fresher and more youthful than a woman in a mid-calf length skirt with hose.

There’s a book out there that is pretty popular called “How Not to Look Old”. I can’t recall the name of the author, but the last time I saw it in the bookstore, I had to look.
Yep, there’s a whole chapter on “undergarments”. I think that’s where I saw that yes, indeed, pantyhose are, in their words, “SO old-lady”.

I shared this information with my sister-in-law so we would be appropriately attired for an upcoming family wedding. News to both of us, but I when I work, it’s from home, and she’s in a male dominated place and wears pants everyday. My D told me this but I didn’t fully believe her. I do now.

The only two women lawyers in my office who have never worn open toe shoes in the office are the two women who are older than me.

You guys have not shopped for pantyhose in aloong time! When D needed a pair, and I was amazed at how many patterns and intricate designs they come in these days! Calvin Klein brand has some really nice ones. My major pet peeve with the hose is that I cant’t wear them more than a couple of times without shredding them (the joys of cat ownership ); and at $5-20/pair, pantyhose becomes money hosed down the drain.

I like open-toe shoes, but the years spent in the lab poisoned my fashion mind, LOL (we had strict dress code for safety reasons). Nowadays, when I shop for shoes, I mentally check if they are “lab-appropriate”. :)

How about a knee-length skirt (which is what I wear) and hose? Seriously, my skin is so pale, and while I don’t have varicose veins, my regular veins show, as well as all the lovely little spots we get as we age. Trust me, I look a lot better in hose!

At a recent party I attended all the women my age in skirts or dresses were wearing tall boots - which made the hose a moot point! Opaque tights seem to be fashionable, at least. It’s more of an issue during the warm weather months - I agree that the bare leg look is not something that is universally flattering.

I’m in my 50s and none of my peers wear stockings in the summer any longer. The key is to put a little color on your legs - like one of the daily moisturizers that gives a little glow. No need to tan - tanning is so last decade.

Wow. This is all news to me. Really.

What if you’re dressing up in a business suit with a skirt? Surely you’d wear pantyhose then, right??

Understatement!

I am still somewhat in shock, or at least disconcerted, over the news of the demise of pantyhose.

I remember garter belts (my early years) and then when pantyhose came IN–and now they’re out? That’s like little old lady shoes. Remember when there was a kind of shoe that only grannies wore? We always wondered where they bought them…

Never did we ever think WE would someday be old.

i wore a suit to work the other day–a skirted suit–subdued print (you’d have to look close to see the tone on tone small paisley), turned up cuff, trendy yet business-y–and i did not know it was wrong to wear pantyhose with it…i guess i’m out of the loop on that. i could not wear that suit without pantyhose. i just know i couldn’t do that…not now in the winter anyway…i never wear pantyhose in the summer…what should i wear with those types of skirted suits? they seem a bit “dressy” for tights…

I went on an interview today and wore pantyhose. So that’s why I haven’t gotten a job yet.

On the other hand, it’s February. In New York City. And I should go bare-legged??

I think you should wear panty hose with a suit in a conservative, corporate environment. I know many young women no longer wear them, but I’m not them. I would make sure they are nice, sheer and expensive looking. With a dark suit of a heavier material or atweed, tights would be fine too.

I don’t wear pantyhose anymore (age 56). I stopped that about 10 years ago. I didn’t wear them to my 30th high school reunion, and my mom was rather horrified. My D was quite adamant that pantyhose were very old lady and I should do without.

She just finished interviews for med schools and she had to wear a real suit, dress shoes, and guess what–pantyhose! There is a definite dress code for those interviews, and it includes pantyhose.

Exactly. To do otherwise would seem as weird as guys in business suits without socks on.

Agreed.

Just because some kids (who don’t have jobs yet) say pantyhose are old-lady doesn’t mean they are out yet. In the winter, only the young can get away with bare legs–and they usually cover them with boots or leggings anyway. Bare legs in the winter look kind of…tacky. Skanky.

I think this is like in the 60s, only our moms wore double-knit suits. We would not be caught dead in them, but it didn’t mean they were “out.” Only out for us.

In the winter I wear knee length boots and tights with skirts and dresses.

I have this European client that swear only hires gorgeous, fashionable people. Every time I go over there I feel like a toad, no matter what I am wearing. Last year I went to a meeting there in the winter and every woman was wearing a skirt with knee length boots. When I got back to the office I went on zappos.com and ordered boots!

There are 2 gorgeous, young assistants in the office where I’m working. They do wear boots a lot! I have to wear my Dansko clogs, though, so can’t do ‘fashionable’ in that way. I make sure my fitted tank tops are long, though, and sometimes go below my casual suit jacket (w/pants). I think that’s apparently sorta trendy. My girlfriend owns a Plato’s Closet (upscale, young women’s consignment). They won’t buy any shirts shorter than 15 inches long.

Jolynne - my girls swear by Plato’s, in fact, they are scheming for their next spree since they have a filled “frequent shopper” card to use - that 20% off goes far, especially if they find good jeans - D1 found a nice COH pair last time!!

PS - it is right by the RIT campus lol

Re: pantyhose wearing…a LOT depends on the kind of shoes you are wearing. If you are wearing any kind of open or peep toed shoes…or anything open in the back…NO HOSE…it looks tacky. If you are wearing regular close toed pumps with a full back and slacks…WHO is going to see your legs anyway???
